HMMMM Athlon 6-24 x 50 competition from Vortex

I have not compared either of those models. I did compare my standard Argos 4-20x50, to a Viper HST, and optically I'd chose the Athlon. Turret wise the Viper wins hands down.

The BTR Argos comes with different, and likely better turrets than the regular Argos, but as I've said I've never used the BTR variant.

Right now I'm considering buying one of these. I have no real need for FFP, so the sfp on this one works fine for me.

I've not used the Athlon lighted reticles yet, but the other newer ones I've tried have been quite good.
The old admonition of "if you don't need it just don't turn it on" always kinda annoyed me, because why carry the extra few oz if it's not necessary, but the more I have the option the more I actually find myself using them.
I find them more usefull on scopes with multiple aiming points. When it gets dark I have little issue using one point as late as shooting light lasts, but if the scope has multiple aiming points I've missed because I thought one dark line was another.

Call Doug at camera land. He knows his stuff.

The new vortex option lacks in a few areas. The Athlon optics coating is better (fully multi-coated vs advanced multi-coated) as well as higher grade gas purging ( nitrogen vs arogon) and it has a shim style zero stop similar to Gen 1 pst. No zero stop on the Vortex. Also illumination might not be that important but is useful in low light situations

The lack of zero stop is the biggest issue for me personally

I don't think Athlon has been toppled from the top yet. At least for my purposes.

I have been playing with a ares. at the lower power settings the illuminated reticle comes in real handy. fwiw, dc

The Diamondback isn’t as good as Athlon. If it was a viper I might go vortex.

The Athlon Midas I have has a great illuminated reticle. It’s useless in bright sun, but very helpful at night, dusk and dawn. It’s got near 10 minutes more usefulness in the evening than a viper.
