Yesterday I loaded up some 44 special loads and then decided to prep some 45 Colt brass. Everything went fine until I started to prime the cases. I had never tried my RCBS universal priming tool with 45 Colt. Imagine my surprise when the first case along with the primer popped out and went flying. The case was easy to find but the gremlins evidently got the primer as it's still missing. I did find two small pistol primers that I had "lost" while snooping for the large primer. To make matters worse I pinched a blood blister on my finger when this happened. I reverted to my old RCBS priming tool which always works and finished up. Lesson learned.

Just looked at one on the RCBS site. How does the tool hold the case in position? Automatic jaws or adjustable jaws?

    Spring-loaded jaws.
Did the OP use the correct "ram"?
    Mine works perfectly.

Had the same thing happen when I tried Priming some Colt 45 with the universal primer tool. I use the old RCBS Priming tool for that caliber. The blood blister will disappear after about a week. That’s how long mine took to heal.

Mine only does it on Colt 45. All other calibers work like a charm

At least one, don’t let your body parts get between two objects you are forcing together.

Could be that you found a way to clone two small pistol primers from a large pistol primer! This would be good news for some of us.:)
I would take that as a sign that someone thinks you should be doing something different instead.

With the RCBS Universal shell holder priming tool, it's the 45 Colt case. The rim and the extractor groove are less than optimum for the shell holder jaws.

Knowing the problem, you can work through it, slowly. I use a different priming tool if I'm priming alot of 45 Colt cases.

The universal case holder does not work with 25 ACP as well. There may be few others.
