Trying to decide what I want to use for an up and coming hog hunt. This will be shot from a blind down into a valley. Guided tour.

I have access to 500S&W and 460Magnum as I really want this to be a handgun hunt.

I reloaded up some of Matt's Hard Cast 280gr

Even though they are Gas Checked I did not push them to hard

I do not think I go great accuracy because these did not have a crimping grove. This is my fault I should have paid attention when they were ordered and instead got the 315gr with double crimp groove.

I will have a pair of shooting sticks to shoot from.
Yes I need more practice for sure.
My first go at it with the 460Magnum

Next up will be the 500Magnum then depending on the results and my comfort level I will pick one and practice with before leaving.
Which one do you like?

Buck of course YOU would LOL. Seriously for penetration purposes or you shoot it better?

Either will have about the same effect on a hog so it boils down to personal preference.

Take whichever one you shoot the best. Seriously, I'd consider 45 Colt with Ruger-only loads with 325gr hardcast to be sufficient for any monster hog. XTP or similar expanding bullets for typical sized hogs, if you prefer. Hogs can be tough, but not that tough.

I am in the “what you shoot better” crowd.

I have killed more hogs with .22 LR than anything else, shuts them off like a light switch in the right spot. Hit one in the wrong spot with a bazooka and it will run off.

FME, I've found my accuracy to be better with the .460, especially with bullet weights of 300 gr or less. I personally see no legitimate reason for a bullet weight of more than 300 gr for hogs. For something like Bison, Moose or DG, the nod would go to the .500 with heavier bullets, but for hogs, I see no need.
