Holster considerations for a snubby SP101

I'm looking for a holster for Ruger SP101 DOA with a 2 1/4 barrel. The idea is to carry this revolver with me bike-packing. I have a special consideration for this holster, as I ride pretty rugged trails and I need the gun to stay in the holster, even as it is being bounced down bumpy roads and trails. I also need it to stay secured if I crash and fall onto the gun. My biggest concern, however unlikely, is the gun dislodging and the trigger being pulled.

Can anyone recommend a secure holster? I would also like to open carry it on my belt or even my backpack's shoulder strap from time to time, but mostly it will be in my backpack.

Any old service style holster with a complete flap should do it, I think.

For open carry I strongly suggest the fobus paddle holster. I have the roto version it allows you to adjust the angle of the holster and it also has a tentioning screw. It it HIGHLY unlikely to fall out under any circumstances. I just picked mine up for $35. I plan on using it in my fobus shoulder holster in the winter time as well.

I wouldn't take any holster that does not have a strap over the top of the gun, or some other active retention.
I'm a cyclist, and while I'm mostly a road bike guy, I have done some pretty serious mtn biking, and it gets really bumpy, and you do fall (hence the full face helmets and armor, etc...)
Can you possibly get a saddle bag, or frame bag for the bike and keep the gun on the bike itself, zipped up in a bag, rather than on your person?

Nushif has the right idea. I would only add one more thing to his suggestion. Spend some money and have it made to the gun so it will be a tight fit to both you and the gun of choice. A military full flap is about the only way to go in your circumstances...

19-3Ben's idea is another way to go as long as you can place it on the bike so that you can get to it and at the same time not be in the way. I would still recommend a full flap holster here too.

If you have a hardtail MTB, then something like this may be just the trick.

If dual suspension it's tougher since you can't really fit a frame bag on many of them (since they don't have a standard double diamond). I'm gonna guess you'd already have a wedge bag with your multitool, CO2 inflator, tire levers, patch kit, etc... inside. So space would be at a bit more of a premium.

When you said "bike packing", I assumed you meant bicycle. You didn't mean dirt bike or something like that did you?

I love my Simply Rugged holster for the SP101 3". I ordered mine with the hammer strap, but honestly never use it, the gun fits very securely with belt tension. I wear mine backpacking, and fishing. When I fish, I do a LOT of boulder hopping and climbing as I make my way to higher reaches of our mountain streams. I've taken more than my share of tumbles and have never been concerned with losing the SP.

I also have a Safepacker for my XD. It's a GREAT "discreet" carry option. You won't make the tree hugging crowd nervous if you go that route.

Come to think of it, I just looked at your username "TwoNiner."
You're obviously a cycling guy like me.
Considering that 29er bikes (which is what I assume you ride) are more commonly found in the hardtail configuration, the bike bags are a very real option. If you have one of the oddball dual-suspension 29ers, it's obviously not as good of an option.

19-3Ben you're right on the money. I ride a 29er single speed (Niner frame). I like the triangle idea of mounting the gun on the bike. However, if I did that I'd like the holster to be soft inside and cover all of the gun...as you know, the bike bounces a lot and everything that goes in my under-seat saddleback gets chewed up over time (try putting a few plastic bags separating your tools and watch how it corrodes from friction).

I also have a geared full suspension bike so I'll need a second option for either stowing the gun in my backpack or on my belt (I wear baggy bike shorts with belt loops).
