The original Walkers were issued in pairs, to be carried in holsters on the saddle. In those days (around the time of the Mexican War), "holster" pistols meant guns that were to be carried on the horse, while "belt" pistols were to be carried on the person. The distinction started to become blurred with the Colt Dragoon series.
