Holster for 5" S&W M&P

I just picked up a 5" S&W M&P .38 revolver. Now I would like to find a fitting holster for a 84 year old revolver. I have a bunch of holsters for 4 and 6" revolvers. The M&P is loose in a 6" K frame holster and to big for the 4" holsters...any suggestions?

5" M&P's were one of the most common lengths from the 20s until the late 60s. Going and finding a vintage piece is your best bet, and can be done cheaply. Check gun shows. Here's a thread from today on a guy who bought a nice pre-war (I think) piece at a show for $4. I also see them on ebay periodically for $10 or $12 - not expensive! Brauer made lots, as did Taft. Brauer also made metal-reinforced spring clip-type shoulder rigs that appear all the time for 5" M&Ps.

Do a little leg work and you can find a vintage holster with out too much effort. I acquired a 5" M&P a while back - it came with a custom-built western rig - very, very nice, but just not the way I wanted to tote it. I found a vintage belt rig and also shoulder rig without much trouble, one at a show and the other on ebay. With some range work, I think you'll find the 5" M&P to be a VERY balanced weapon - perhaps the handiest of all .38 specials out there. There is a small, but dedicated, cult of the 5" M&P. More balanced than the 4", and easier to wield than the 6". It's clear why it was the most common length for several decades.

Talk about coincedence (misspelled I'm sure, I'm Dyslexic), I just posted about a holster that would be good for a 5" barrel S&W M&P Revolver. Check out the topic listed below this one. It is titled "Another Vintage Holster". I found that holster for an entire $4 (US) at a gunshow two weeks back. It needed to be cleaned up a bit, there was verdigris on the fasteners, and the leather needed some sddle soap, Pecard's Leather Dressing and I put two coats of Kiwi Neutral Coloured boot polish on it. I'm happy with how it turned out.

It is made by Brauer Bros., I think pre-WWII era at least that is my (and one other person's so far) guess. The classic "Hunter" style field holster, I never did get into the new nylon, "Kydex"? "Tactical drop leg, "paddle" or the inner waist band concealed holsters, I still like the old, heavy, leather holsters that were popular decades before I was even thought of...LOL.

This antique $4 Brauer Bros. is still in great shape, I would not hesitate to take it backpacking whenever (soon God, please!!!LOL) I get back to Alaska.

In addition to finding good deals on holsters at gunshows, I have found a couple at antiques stores as well. Sometime people have no clue what they have and price it real cheap, but that can go the other way as well.

another older holster I got cheap

Hello once more

This is another older holster I got a while back. I found this for $5 (US) at a local antique store. The revovler in the holster is my mid-1960's S&W Model 10-5 with a standard weight 4" barrel, there is about just over one inch of holster "left over", so this would also work great for a 5" barrel.

The "Jury is till out" as to the maker, era, etc on this holster. I have seen holsters made by a maker named "Red Head" (thanks to help on this forum) that were very close, but my holster has no makers name, so the mystery goes on...LOL.

Anyway, finding these older holster for fairly cheap is just one of those things that happen from time to time.
