I know the thread stickies say not to post about home invasions because "in reality it's probably a situation that you are least likely to have to face" but this has happened twice recently in the county north of me:

    from http://www1.pressdemocrat.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070201/NEWS/70201002/1033/NEWS01

My only point is, don't believe people when they say they are the police. Use your peep-hole and ask for ID.

Earlier today I was browsing the Harbor FrieghtTools sale circular and I saw a "Video Door Phone" on sale for $49.99 --- It even can unlock the door.

This means you can answer the door with out going to it - you could answer the front door from say the kitchen...or wherever you store a firearm.

I am going to see if its worth the $50 - they also have an all weather camera for outside for only $29.99 that I could hoomk up to an old PC monitor.

Call the station first and see if it's legit before you answer the door.

Training or not, six invaders will do some damage. Isn't that the number of people who ran the NG off the border?:fire: :fire: :fire: :fire:

Get that remote door unlocker and just sit there with an M4 pointed at the door. Thats the only way out that I can see. Six guys are gonna get in, and they're gonne *F* things up. Just warn anyone else that you live with to be weary and stay armed all the time.

Six intruders is a great number to overcome, but I have to wonder how many would stick around after being confronted by an armed home owner.

Why would anyone need a gun in California. There's no violent crime. :banghead:

Then I guess a lot of people are going to get shot over a mistake.

Robbers don't pretend to be making social calls, they pretend to be serving no-knock warrants. It's pretty hard to tell robbers from cops when they're both going to be wearing black masks and screaming obscenities... I think Mudcamper has brought up an interesting issue here.

Maybe the practical way to tell is that real cops would be using flash-bangs and shooting the dog?

That does sound like the way to go, vynx. (Once I get a hut with more than two rooms :D )

SWAT doesn't always do either of those things.
I guess there really isn't any good way to tell if they are real cops. I suppose they would use a door-buster instead of just kicking. Chances are, that if these guys are coming in and stealing used clothes, their weaponry and equipment isn't that high-tech. I mean who's gonna spend $2000 on a decked out M-4 and then steal your long johns? But by then its probably too late anyway. I have heard of re-enforced door frames that are even hard for SWAT to get down. Its not illegal.

If you shoot and they're cops, you lose.
If you don't and they're not, you lose.

In reality, you must look at your own life, and the lives of your friends, family and business associates ... how many of you here have a realistic fear that the po-po would want to kick in your door?

Other than hitting my house by mistake (which based on the neighborhood I live in is slim to none), there is zero reason I can think of that the police would be kicking in my door, so I'm going to have to assume that someone kicking in my door yelling "Police" is not the real police.

I imagine most of the good folk in this forum are in my position as well.

IF something I've said on the internet is enough to get my door kicked in then America is dead and I don't wanna live here anymore.

Luckily I know most of the policemen in my town, or at least I know who's not the police. I don't think the police would kick my door in by mistake.

Mistakes happen. There's no point getting bent out of shape if they happen to you.

This is no different then any other home invasion thread. And therefore it is off topic.
