DURHAM, N.C. -- A homeowner killed one suspect and wounded another during an apparent break-in early Wednesday, police said.

Residents of 3301 Dearborn Drive told police that two men kicked in their front door at about 1:40 a.m. and entered the house. At least one of the men was carrying a gun, they told police.

A man, a woman and a 15-month-old boy were in the home when the incident occurred, police said.

One of the adults shot and killed one suspect and wounded the second, police said.

The first suspect, who hasn't been identified, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The second suspect fled from the house. A short time later, a 19-year-old man showed up at the Duke University Hospital emergency room for treatment of a gunshot wound to his arm.

The man was treated at the hospital and released, and police said he is being questioned by investigators.

No charges have been filed in the case.

Glad the family is ok (and armed :D ). Good to see this reported, hope further details will be provided.

Armed, unlawful breaking and entering, yep he was sure asking for it. From the article, it appears the shooting was justified, but then I'm not the grand jury.

They updated the story
Rashaad Cox, of Newcastle Road in Durham, was charged with first-degree burglary and robbery with a dangerous weapon in connection with the attempted burglary, police said.

So two dirt bags are sitting in car sippin and sniffin, and just for some excitement they decided to not play Russian Roulette, but instead a quick round of :

Are The Occupants Armed and Will They Use It.

You get one turn to pick a residence, points scored if you smash the door down and go in loud. Crawl silently through a window and points are deducted.

The occupant is unarmed or unwilling - Bingo...take what you want.

Occupant is armed, in practice, and on plan - Boom... end of game.

...move on, nothin to see here.

Reasonable Action

Seems like a lawful action to prevent harm coming to yourself and your family. If I had a wife and a 15 month old son in that situation, I would have taken the same action.

I wonder why the knucklehead insisted on including their street address in the article?

What benefit to journalistic integrity is there in posting this for the world to see? Does pointing out the location of the family somehow impact the credibility of the writer??

I'd certainly hope so. Otherwise they'd be directing angry friends 'n family of the perps onto these poor people for no reason at all.

Well it seems the news has had a few black eyes on factual information the last couple days. Maybe street adresses are easy things to backup since they exsist...unlike digital images in photoshop...

But I have noticed in a lot of news stories involving firearms that the addresses get stuck in there for some reason. :scrutiny:

The survivor should be charged with First Degree Murder. Hey, it's a homicide during the commission of a burglary. Doesn't matter that the deceased was an accomplice. That just makes it ironic. Ahh.... doesn't this prove that there is a God? :D

Gary, that's right! I forgot all about that until you mentioned it just now. I watched this play out in a video a few years ago where the gunman was shot and killed, but his unarmed accomplice was not shot at. He surrendered to the store owner, was charged with 1st degree murder, but upon prosecution and conviction it was reduced to 2nd degree. Still not too bad - 25 to life.

Rashaad, Rashaad, The Muslim religion is a religion of peace my brother. What have you done to disgrace yourself in the eyes of allah! :barf: Or did you change your name to reflect the culture you live in.
