One was armed with a shotgun.

Florida man fights off three armed robbers with a MACHETE

I'm not sure exactly what was going down here. The homeowner either knew the robbers and was sure they wouldn't shoot or he was extremely lucky.

It's also interesting that your link is to a British paper and not to one in Florida.
I wonder if the Miami Herald decided to "ignore" the incident as it didn't follow their agenda.

Machetes are extremely common weapons in Florida, especially among the immigrant Hispanic population, some of whom may be seeking to remain "under the radar". I see them all the time, and every hardware store, Wal-Mart, Home Depot, and the like around here stocks them for under ten bucks. In fact, there appears to have been two machetes involved in this incident.

Robberies among this population are common as well, as many of them do not hold bank accounts and keep their money with them or at home. Of course, others among them know this (as do many non-Hispanic criminals) and will take advantage of opportunities associated with this, especially on Fridays and Saturdays, when the working have just been paid.

The US has lowbrow entertainment products masquerading as highbrow "news". The Daily Mail dropped that pretense long ago.

Having spent a career "on the street" in law enforcement I can attest that in a violent confrontation (no matter what side of the law the main actors are on....) anything (and any weapon....) is likely to be employed - and the results can be so random that you'd swear it was some kind of plot for a low grade movie...

That's why street stuff should be avoided at all costs (and the older I get the smarter that admonition looks to me....). I've seen incidents where the least likely firearms had deadly effect (if the user didn't have the cheap POS blow up in their hands) and firearms incidents where competent gun handlers were disarmed or badly injured by someone improvising with anything from a "blunt instrument" to a cheap pocket knife....

I'll save the war stories for another time -but hearing that someone fought off armed attackers with nothing but a machete sounds like a routine incident down here in south Florida.... just another Saturday night party in paradise.

Truth being preached. It's the same here in AZ. I went to a call one night where an older gent beat the ever loving snot out of a 19 year old subject with one of those knotted rope dog pull toys. I mean beat the socks off this punk. Little c.h.u.d. pulled a knife on the victim (not a good choice in victims) as he got out of his car and demanded money. The old gent pulled his dog's toy out of the passenger seat and "went to work". Neighbors came over and stopped the victim from beating him to damned near death and held the subject for us. Of course the kid was clowned mercilessly on his way to jail. He got a 3-5 bit for AAR and ADW. I wanted to buy the older gent a good bottle of scotch.

A good naval cutlass works really well in house hallways and is extremely lethal if it connects. Something like this: https://www.amazon.com/Cold-Steel-Cutlass-Leather-Scabbard/dp/B000H6KTLW Looks awesome as a wall hanger too.

Fortunately the shotgun wielder didn't unload on him. I'm surprised he's still alive. One handed swords leave another hand for something lethal with a bit more range...

Naa...you need something with a pommel you can unscrew, to end your foe rightly. ;)
