"HILLSBOROUGH, N.C. — After two men broke into his home and shot his wife and daughter, 62-year-old Carlton Whitted Sr. wounded the intruders with his .22-caliber rifle.

The intruders, whose identities were released, and Whitted's relatives were being treated at Duke University Hospital after Monday's pre-dawn attack.

Orange County Sheriff Lindy Pendergrass said warrants would be served when the pair is released by the hospital charging them with first-degree burglary, assault with a deadly weapon and shooting into an occupied dwelling.

Whitted said he woke up after hearing a loud noise about 3:40 a.m. Monday at his isolated, rural home. Two men in their 20s burst into his mobile home after kicking in the door.

"It sounded like a bomb went off," he said.

Pendergrass said no charges would be filed against Whitted, who said he intended to shoot the intruders again but his rifle was out of ammunition. The men escaped, but were arrested at the hospital when they arrived about 5:15 a.m. seeking treatment.

"I was going to let them have it," he said.":) :) :)

    Shooting in NC

Good on'im! Maybe they'll remember that little lesson about messin' with a man of...advanced age.

For the most part, men approachin' 65 figger it kinda like this...

"Well...I've about done my threescore and ten and there really ain't much that I wanna go do any more. Time goes real fast these days, and a 10-year stretch in the pen will probably seem like about 3 months to me. They gotta feed me three times a day and gimme a place to sleep. I get free medical and free dental and all the books I can read and if I get real sick, they'll let me go home...so why NOT shoot the little SOB?

Good for him. Too bad he didn't have a larger caliber rifle.

Like the old Houston man that finally had enough of a punk stealing his Social Security check.
When asked by the police, Why did you reload and shoot him again?

    "Because he kept moving."

    Ruled a "good shooting" BTW.:D

Ya know, when I think of how many fast, accurate rounds I can dump out of my 10/22 with a 25 rd mag-line, I'm beginning to think that this is not a bad home defense option!:)

Always bring a gun to a gun fight. Always bring plenty of ammunition.

Why didn't the two thieves also get charged with attempted murder?

"Firing into an occupied dwelling?" They f-in' SHOT two unarmed women in their own home!

Shot placement is key. After hitting each of them a couple of times, he should have slowed down and taken some good, aimed shots.
