For Christmas I gave my 9 year old nephew, Logan, the classic, timeless Christmas gift, a Daisy Red Ryder BB gun, which he loves, and is a crack shot with...

Sage, his sister, is 7, and an exuberant bundle of energy, but for some reason, is intimidated by Logan's DRR, she keeps referring to it as "scary", or should I say she *kept* calling it scary....

tonight, I grabbed some assorted cans (steel soup cans and aluminum soda cans) and a couple VitaminWater bottles, and set them up on the target stand as a little "shooting gallery", I then got an evil idea....

I grabbed my Benjamin 392 pellet rifle and an unopened can of Diet Pepsi and went back downstairs, shaking up the can as I approached Logan

"what are you doing with the soda, Uncle Russ?"
we're gonna shoot it
"cool!"
you know what happens when you shoot a can of soda that's been shaken up?
"no"
it *should* explode...
"Cool!"

so, we set up the shaken can on the target stand, Sage is riding her scooter on the driveway, a safe distance away...

"What are you doing?"
shooting a shaken up can of soda
"Why"
because it should explode when hit
"Neat!"
you want to come closer and watch?
"no, i'll watch from here"

Logan then proceeded to almost hit it a few times with the DRR, so I decided to let him try my pellet rifle, i put in three pumps of air and a RWS Superdome pellet, showed him where the safety was, and handed him the rifle

he lined up on the can, fired and the can *leaped* into the air doing three full revolutions and spewing a spiral of Pepsi before falling to it's side, Logan handed me the rifle, and then ran over to the can....

"Cool!, it ripped it wide open!"
he was amazed at how the can was just ripped apart, and that he got it on his first shot, by this time Sage had run over to look at the can as Logan was happily jabbering about how cool it was

He then went and filled one of the vitamin water bottles with tap water and put the cap on it, trying my pellet rifle with eight pumps in it, that shot launched the cap into orbit and caused a fountain of water from the entry and exit holes

about this time, Sage sat on the steps behind where Logan was shooting and watched as Logan had a great time knocking over cans and bottles with the DRR, a huge smile on her face every time Logan scored a hit, in fact, she started suggesting targets....

She still declined to try the DRR herself, but she no longer seemed scared of it, I think she may even want to try it the next time we go plinking, as she suggested that I go get some more full soda cans to shoot for next time

Hmm, I sense a pink DRR in her near future as a belated birthday gift

I think she understands now... shooting is *fun*

Sure sounds like you are on the rite path to having two little shooting buddies with you. Congratulations and keep up the great work

Good luck
God speed

Hmmmm.... I wonder if that would work on the impressionable mind of a 20,30,40,etc. year old anti-gun lib?

Yes it would. Before starting to shoot at a more formal range, I used to bring along a case of the cheapest soda cans I could buy. We would shake the heck out of them and set them at ranges from 25-75 yards and shoot them with a scoped .22. SO MUCH FUN. I'm a "Lib" as are all of the new shooters who I've introduced to shooting.

Josh

"Lib" here too and that sounds like great fun. Wish I had such a cool uncle when I was coming up.

Another successful plinking session after work....

On the way home from work, I stopped at the grocery store, picked up a 12 pack of cheap store-brand diet soda (orange, as it'd be the most visible) and some cheap potatoes for targets

Logan and Sage stopped by, Logan immediately asked if we could go shooting, to which I of course said yes, we took the potatoes and soda and set them up on the target stand, and started plinking away

We both learned a little from this session, first off that the DRR is a *GREAT* shaken-up-soda-can killer, it's results are far more dramatic than my Benjamin 392, the 392 just *blasts* the cans open, spewing the contents in one big rupture, but the DRR, with it's lower velocity and smaller hole (.177 vs. .22) turns the can into a "soda fountain", it knocks the can over, and a fountain of soda sprays out of the can for a good 2 seconds or so, I can get similar results with the 392 with just one pump of air, but the larger hole makes a shorter and quicker fountain of soda

Hmm, I think I may build a little A-frame thingy with some wire hanging down, to suspend a can in midair to get the full effect of the fountain of soda...

Anyway, a few minutes later Sage came out, saw we were shooting soda cans and potatoes, and sat down to watch, her laughter when Logan slayed another can of soda was great, once we called cold range, she then ran over and grabbed a can of soda, exclaiming "I want to shake it up", as she was shaking it up, I asked her "Sage, do you want to shoot your can of soda?"

She thought for a moment, grinned, and said "maybe later, when you're done"

as we approached the end of our plinking session (Sage happily shaking up her can of soda all the while), I asked Sage again, this time she *did* want to try, trying Logan's DRR...

It took her a few shots to get comfortable, getting close, but not *quite* on target, I suggested she move in a little closer, she did, and on the next shot, *nailed* the can at low dead center, center mass, and was rewarded with an impromptu little shower of Diet Orange soda (just a little bit, but she did get wet ;) )

She squealed with joy, as well as with surprise at getting soda on her, grinning like crazy, she handed the gun back to Logan, exclaiming "I DID IT!"

I saw Logan shouldering the gun, planning to shoot Sage's can, I stopped him, and asked Sage if she wanted that can as a souvenir of her first time shooting a BB gun, beaming, she said yes, Logan put down the gun and Sage ran to the target stand, exclaiming in surprise when some more soda poured out of the .177 caliber holes in the can, she ran back behind the shooting position, proudly showing off her can

I did it, I shot this can!
yep, that was a great shot, did you get wet too
Yeah, that was funny...... can we do it tomorrow too?
Sure, we just need more cheap diet soda....

So, Sage, do you like target shooting?
YES!, It's FUN!
(remember, this was the little girl that yesterday thought BB guns were "scary"....)
I then got another evil idea, I had missed her birthday and needed to get her a gift...
Sage, would you like your own BB gun**?
She thought for a moment, and then, with the biggest grin I have seen from her, said
"Yes!"

When I responded with "Oh no, i think I just created a monster", she laughed, and emitted a growl...

So, after they had left for the evening, I stopped down at KTP, and picked up a Daisy Buck BB gun, as Logan's DRR's LOP is a little long for her, and the Buck has a more compact stock, I did want to get her the pink DRR, but the Buck will fit her better, plus, if she really wants a pink gun, she can paint the stock herself

When they stop by tomorrow I'll give her her belated birthday gift

Looks like she's no longer afraid of guns :)

"The dumbest thing you ever did (or had done to you) as you were learning shootin'."

At my age 12, the family went to Mt.Morris, PA, to see relatives. They lived in rural Mt.Morris, "up, off the Red Dog." I was hardly "street-wise", but my 13 y.o. cousin Herschel was. He wanted to show me how to shoot his PaPa's single-shot 12-ga. "Just squat down like this ... ... point at that tree out there and jerk the trigger." So, totally off balance, and further stressed about the "jerk the trigger" instruction, I did as told. A second later I was aiming at blue sky, wondering where "up" really was, and beginning to laugh along with cuz. He ended up wetting his pants. We just shot at Sears-Roebuck catalogs the rest of that week. I miss ol' Herschel. He taught me how to shinny up a persimmon tree and taste the fruit, too -- before it had been frosted. Dao.
