OK, I grabbed a bottle of Hoppe's the other day and now I see that it's labeled Synthetic Blend.

So is it very much different than the old stuff or is it going to be like "New Coke" was...? o_O

I have used it. It is a water-borne solvent that still has the #9 smell, but not very strong. It cleans, but when I let it soak it started to dry. Not what I wanted. I gave mine away.

I've used other water based cleaning solutions, the label usually indicates you can add more water. A lid over the container will reduce the evaporation. While it's not in the familiar methods we got used to, water borne cleaners are pretty good stuff and less hazardous than those based on petrochemicals. It's something we will just have to get used to - shipping this stuff is getting more and more complicated.

Volatile aromatics constantly gassing off the older stuff is something to consider . . .

Ahhhh ... a Hoppes#9 version that will efficiently remove the potassium chloride deposited by chlorate-primered ammo. Excellent! I will have to get some. :)

Now there's something I hadn't considered. I have so far resisted the Synthetic Hoppes, because, well, I've been using the original since the 70s, when it came in glass jars.
Now, I mostly use Ed's Red, because it's chock-a-block with petrochemicals that effectively remove the carp I want removed. And, it is a decent light lube, plus a bit of rust prevention.

Hooray for Petrochemicals !

I hadn't considered the synthetic versions' possible ability to negate the effects of corrosive primers.
