Since there is no Handguns: Derringers forum I figured this belonged here since it is chambered in .38 Special.

I was curious if a JHP bullet would effectively expand from a less than 2 inch barrel; like from a derringer.
Hornady Critical Defense .38 Special 110 grain JHP (non +P). Penetrated two water jugs and stopped in the third. The red tip was found in the first jug.
Final diameter of the bullet was .50 caliber.

I've considered trying the .38 special critical defense from hornady. Is the 110 grain bullet good for self defense or would one be better with a 158 gr swc behind 4.5 gr of bullseye? Which would be a better choice?

When I carry this derringer I keep it loaded with Buffalo Bore 150 grain "Combat" Wadcutters.
I want something that will put a clean round hole into flesh and dig very deep.
I carry these 110 grain bullets when I travel to a more urban area and overpenetration becomes an issue.

Yeah wadcutters probably wouldn't be the best choice for urban areas. I guess the critical defense is made for what it says "critical defense" not plinking. But as far as reliable expansion from a 2 inch barrel I wouldn't know.

Anybody know if there are any "FBI" gel tests with this round?
I've always seen this round expand but hardly any information regarding penetration depths.
