I came home from work today, to find that my front gate was locked but my front door was open..

My gf was running around with a flashlight and a knife... It seemed that the neighbor said that someone was walking on the rooftop of the 1st floor, in front of my patio;

This guy is fairly brave. My gf blew the whistle I bought her, he seemed to have fled..

This guy was about to strike again, except for a neighbor noticing him..

All I can say is, this guy is going to go down. The police here is utterly useless..

I'm [self-sensored] "upset" <insert sailor talk here> and I'm going to :cuss: :cuss: :cuss: if I catch him [/self-sensored]

Either he saw something worth aquiring on the first trip,
or the word is out that more goods are available for fencing.

can you build a really big, figure 4 Box Trap?

Please request that an admin delete or censor your post, my friend. If you DO end up killing this guy, there's a chance that the police could use your pre-stated intent to kill against you.

Got broken into once before I bought an alarm system and once afterward. I guess he thought the alarm signs in the windows and yard were joke until that loud ringing started in his ears.

Then I added a dog to the mix. I think a dog is the best deterrent. I no longer worry about the guns or other belongings while I'm gone. People may think they can snatch something before the alarm sounds but they never think they can snatch something before the dog snatches them.

Quick update:

The guy was walking on the rooftops, in front of my patio (the first floor roof comes inline with my patio) and the neighbors scared him off. They said, there were two of them, one as a lookout, the other robbing the place. They broke into every scooter's trunk-case also; looking for things. Profile: (not a big surprise) about 17-18 year's old, thin, young, aggressive looking hoodlem..

He ran down the rooftops and turned; he knows the place like the back of his hand, so I suspect he lives within rooftop walking distance from my place..

The neighbor below saw one of them, and yelled for him to stop! The guy barricaded the door, and whistled and the guy who was on the roof, scrambled and both took off..

My gf's scooter was parked at her work this week; and so her's didn't get broken into..

The entire building is very frightened; And the neighbors say they are living in fear.. I don't understand the mentality, I am going to do nothing to protect myself, but wallow in fear..

twoblink,

It's called "Victim Mentality". It is a contagious mental condition.

The fact that these people are conditioned to believe that the police, (which as you say are useless) are there to protect them, and wont causes a lot of mental conflict.
They can't be cured by anything but the realization that they are responsible for their own defence. But this usually wont happen, especially if they are all together with their collective fears feeding off each other.
Take care of yourself as best you can and stay aware of but away from the flock. You don't want to be infected by their V.M..

"He slipped on the roof and fell," said the police spokesman "Really the best thing that could have happened to him."

We can only hope. Glad your GF can handle a knife.

Lets see no guns, no time to train guard dogs what are the options? These guys sound real fast and agile so getting together and hiring an (armed) guard would probably not catch them. What are the laws on Booby traps over there? You could easily set up a high tech version of a "Malayan Whip" that would , at least put the guy in the hospital for a while. Buy Ragnar Benson's book "Man trapping" IF its available (Paladin Press). Or use your brains and figure something devious in that "special" closet that you and everyone in your circle is trained to avoid.

Burglars have been known to return to claim the property they didn't steal the first couple of times. The one thing I like about Islamic law is the chopping off of right hands.

Sorry twoblink, I was concerned they would be back. As stated they inventory and either they or a another burglar returns to steal again. One dude may be into electronics, another for say the small personal items.

Had an employee hit 4 times, just moved into a new built home.
- small window broken --firearms stolen
-same window broken --electronics stolen
[wife is expecting 1st child, not wearing wedding ring/jlry]
--must have stolen a key on previous trip no sign of entry, but jlry stolen and kitchen ransacked
--4th time is scarey, evething has been replaced, new baby at home, alarm system --While parents visiting and helping, noise heard in driveway. Garage door opener and key to her vehicle spares must have been stolen, just opened garage, started up and drove off while others in house trying to get things settled with baby.
Brazen huh? Her car found a month later, stripped and trashed.

twoblink,

Baseball time. Organize a "Team" of your neighbors. Think Louisville slugger or even aluminum implements. One for each member that decides to "Join Your Team".

Practice. Practice. Practice. No bunting allowed. Throwing a bat at an errant pitcher, while unsportsmanlike, can make him think twice.

Get your team organized. Infield, outfield, you know the drill.

Cover all bases.

Have them ready to play at any time. A phone call, a whistle blast or three to alert the team, is he headed towards first or third. Is anyone "On-deck" studying the pitcher's moves? Hire a "batboy" to get some info on who, where, when... (small kids can see a lot if they're taught properly)

Have some fun here (if that's possible). Can you ingrain that good old "Kick some (booty)" spirit in your newfound team members?

If you lead, some may follow. But it'll mark you as a leader.

Get Some!

Adios

Taiwanese are weird. They'll fight tooth and nail while in suits about politics, but will just shudder like sheep about their homes.

Twoblink and I are different.

Remember, these guys might be amped up on something - in other words, this may not be a... 'level playing field'.

I suggest you 'arm' yourselves with a digital camera, in addition to tools which might better survive blunt force impact.

Man, that complex you live in must just scream "VICTIM!" for them to come back so soon after the 1st time. At least the neighbors have gotten together & have learned to stand up for themselves. Maybe some good is developing...neighbors looking out for each other & all.
On a side note, were all the TV volumes up loud when you got home? Anyone have a rolled up TV guide ready to pounce? :scrutiny:
Have you thought of a nice pellet gun? My cousin & I used a pellet rifle for hunting in the Philippines a few years back w/ pretty good results. I'd bet a burgler shot w/ a pellet in the right spot wouldn't be returning.
Good luck, stay safe

At least you guys didn't lose your island to the Redcoats in a drug deal gone bad.

:banghead:

twoblink,
I'm glad you and your gf are ok. I do like Baba Louie's suggestion of rallying the neighbors together. If they're scared as sheep, it'll take them as a group to get strong together.

Tell Janie I said to stay tough and fight like a hellcat when it hits the fan.

What part of the city do you live in? (Not downstreet from the Karaoke district? ;) Most places I've ever seen in Taiwan are built of concrete & locked liked fortresses, what makes your abode so inviting?

This much crime, consider a move. I'm assuming that you rent...

Twoblink,

I might have enough mileage for a free flight. Instead of visiting, can I fly you back home to...

Never mind. Forget California. Let's run away to the US, the border's wide open.

Twoblink, what is the local authorities opinion of those who defend themselves (especially Arrogant Americans who are there visiting)?

Hope its not like England where just hurling insults at the criminal will end up getting you put in jail

CWL,

Moving doesn't solve the problem, it's not a geographic problem so much as a mentality and "hoodlem" problem.

What's the view of Taiwan when it comes to "American punks" like me who want to "defend themselves"??? Not good. Most say that "harming" a thief will get your rear-end thrown in jail..

One of the reasons that most people are so passive is that one of the famous stories was that a thief broke into the house, and the father was there, and got mad and chased him out onto the streets; he stabbed him with a pencil (the only thing he had in his hand) and it happened to be the jugular vein, and the thief died... The father got 18 years in jail. So now, everybody is MORE afraid of going to jail and so nobody resists... Of course, I'd hate to imagine myself or my gf being harmed... The thieves seem to be quite the violent type, while they opt to run, if they are confronted in a house, most believe they will do harm instead of try to flee, and yet they do nothing. I am glad my gf doesn't have the "Victicrat mentality" as Larry Elder calls it..

What is rediculous is that I went shopping for a baseball bat, and they sell something that looks like a baseball bat, but a little bit smaller; it says "Self-defense bat". So apparently, the need for a self-defense bat has gotten to the point that they have ones specially designed for such use. It's a bit smaller, for "easier swinging by everybody in the family" quoting from the instructions... :what:

Still haven't finished cleaning up all the mess that the thief left; just found out, gf bought a shirt the day before, and the tag was still on it, and the thief stole that. Also, two of my DVD's are missing as well... :fire: :cuss:

I activate my motion detection camera before I leave now..

CWL, what makes my building so inviting? First, these guys are local, that's #1. Second, I live in a semi-high rise building, (5 stories) and the first story is actually detached... The roof of the first story is almost eye-level with my patio... Yes, I have metal gates on my patios, but they broke the hinge (not the lock). The fact that they can walk on the rooftops and "shop" the houses without problems is what makes my building and those around mine, so appealing.. Two buildings down, was hit too...

Crossbows and harpoons are illegal unless you make it yourself, and then you have to go through a registration approval.. metallic BB's and pellets are illegal, only airsofts...:fire: :banghead:

"Officer, my bat was standing in the corner and he kept running into it, I swear!!!" :D

Can the witnesses do a photo ID? Don't know what the police procedures are there, but I'm sure they can be more heavy handed in investigating than American cops.

How about booby traps, not weapon booby traps like shotguns tied to door, but improvised ones with household items?
