Hi everybody.

After some research and a lot of help from everybody here the wife and I picked up our first gun a few days ago (S&W 686 4" 7-shot) for home defense/bedside. Originally we were going to take the NRA starter course this past weekend which teaches you safety, operation, cleaning, and some basic range rules, but I was unable to find any instructors on the NRA website in the Houston area who teach the beginner's levels of courses.

Anyway, if anybody could point me in the right direction I would appreciate it. We're not looking for a CHL here, just a beginner (I think the NRA course is just a couple of hours) instructional going over the basics of safety, the range, and cleaning the firearm.

Surely there's instructors in the Houston area who provide this? We're actually pretty excited to get out to the range so we can become more familiar with this gun but I don't want to do so until I know I'm safe and I know I can properly clean it afterwards, etc.

Thanks for any suggestions.

There are 2 places that I know of (or knew of).

Pick up a Leisure Learning (or go to the web site: http://www.llu.com/0000.htm#Fishing and Firearms). There was a guy giving Beginners safety classes.

Here's the add from the Website:
Beg. Handgun Familiarization
Learn firing range procedures and safety precautions. Supervised use of the weapon follows. It also covers sections of the Texas Penal Code so students know when they can carry and/or use a weapon, plus the proper loading, unloading, maintenance and use of a firearm, mental preparedness, and confidence conditioning. Students should bring the handgun (without ammo) to the second class. NOTE: Guns are not to be brought to the first class. Second class meets at a shooting range near Hobby Airport. Class size: 3-10.
Buddy Kelley is a DPS and NRA-certified instructor. He has been teaching hunters, police and civilian groups since 1954.
$35 + $35-44 range & ammo fee (payable at first class meeting) depending on your gun and preference
Greenway Plaza Area: Richmond/Kirby
N0871E: 2 Tues 6-9pm Oct 17, 24

Also, call Top Gun Range (http://www.topgunrange.com/) think they teach beginners classes.

Good luck. Shoot straight. The Lawyers a watching.
