I used to have the base of a 5" shell casing.
I hacked off all but about 3" of the brass and turned it into a ashtray.
If I remember right, the primer extended quite a way into the casing.
it disappeared over the years

That's interesting. I've got a couple other pieces of trench art I will be doing a video on an "Officer's Pointer" from WWII consisting of a 50BMG case, into which was insert a 40mm primer, and then on top, a .50BMG bullet, on the bottom of the .50BMG case is a WWII era zync penny. It's pretty cool.

I've also got a 40mm case somebody cut off to make into an ashtray.

Great stuff.

Flashtube.

I have several pieces including cases from shots fired in anger. These are among my treasured possessions. I have a friend who makes a fair bit of shooting money turning cases into various items such as ashtrays, belt buckles and beer mugs. He also does an extensive job of engraving cases with unit emblems, name rank, etc. when a member retires or ships out.

Do you have contact information for your buddy?

I admire anyone who can, and does, this kind of work.

Thanks.
