They need the ammo to defend themselves from all the bears they out there in the hairy-chested West. Plus, fist-fighting in elf boots is more of a challenge!:)

You just can't go around bracing everyone you disagree with. Sometimes a good stomping is all that is needed to prove superiority! :D

Hitting people is more fun than getting shot

You can punch someone, now, 15 minutes from now, later today, early tommorrow, several times the day after that, and twice on sunday. Shootin em just don't work that way less your doing somethin wrong.

Buckin the tiger, an paintin the town just aint the same without a good brawl an some drinkin buddies. Ya won't have too many drinkin buddies if every brawl involves shootin anything that moves instead of hitting anything that moves with a chair, bottle etc.

    :D

And how is it that 'em Cowboys can take so many solid blows to the head and get back up and never bleed?

Whiskey bottle to the temple.....Cowboy gets up unphased.

2x4 to the face.....Cowboy gets up unphased.

Funny you ask... I've always wondered why there's more punching and kicking going on in Hockey, Baseball, and Basketball than there is in the sport of Boxing...:neener: :D

    Solid blows to the head?

    Don't know how it works....

But I've never passed out an I been kicked once or twice by some not so friendly horses, bashed with 2X4 an 4X4's(fallin off stuff, buildin things etc.), an I happen to be tall an have had several memorable experiences with low doors.....
I think ya just have to start swearin as loud an as fast as ya can to let the pressure off, then ya don't swell up so bad or pass out.

Some folks says I aint right, but the voices in my head says I's fine. An them other folks been sayin that for as long as I can remember
    ;)

Cause in the 1930's, '40's and '50's Hollywood West, the hero had to prove he was a morally superior, real man and not some tubercular, wimp-boy dentist from Virginia whose only option fo self-protection was to kill.

I'd guess it was because on gunsmoke you couldn't show a guy getting disembowled with an Arkasas toothpick, or cleaved open with a tomahawk. Besides... not ALL conflict leads to gunfire.

The Quiet Man would have been a short film had it ended in a gunfight.

    Gunns,

I wouldn't have said that to Doc Holidays face had i met him on the street. When you're that fast you don't have to prove moral superiority.

The movies popularized the myth of fist fighting, IMO.

Fists aren't very effective, and if one does deliver an effective blow, its chances of being injured are pretty high.

Try drawing and firing a gun with an injured hand sometime. Next time you'll go straight to the rock, club, or gun.

As I was lying on a pre-op gurney to get my hand operated on, they brought in another guy who'd slugged somebody in the teeth. Cut the tendons for his pinky and ring finger and left him with a horrible septic wound. The docs fixed my hand, but the other guy's prognosis was "might as well amputate the fingers."

Blackhawk, you mean you can hurt yourself by fist fighting? Next you'll be telling us that you can hurt yourself or others by gunfighting.

Come on, Blackhawk, I've seen the movies and everything--be a man and endanger yourself and others.

I agree w/ Blackhawk. Getting a solid blow and not injuring your hand/wrist is very difficult. That is, unless you wear Harbinger ultra-lightweight boxing gloves around everywhere...

Them TV and movie cowpokes fight so gentlemanly, too...sure, you'll see the occasional whisky-bottle-over-the-noggin manuever, but you won't see no knees-to-the-groin shots or nuthin' like that... :D

Ever see a fistfight come to an end when a guy throws a punch, realizes he's just broken his hand, and stands there yelling and shaking his hand? Man, that'll hurt in the morning!
Not something you're likely to see in a movie, however. geegee

If you read any of Robert B. Parker's Spenser novels, he talks a lot about how Spenser's hands take a beating when he's giving one to a BG. Changed my thoughts about how I hit people (...reaching for the whiskey bottle. )
