yeah, yeah, i know... "don't." :p

i've got here an ak of some sort; says it's made in romania and imported by cai, and the wood appears to be at least 50% lacquer. i've also got a chinese sks with surprisingly nice wood. both need to be returned to their owner soon, but i would like to clean them first - it's the least i can do for someone who let us use both rifles, a wingmaster, a glock 17 and a glock 23, a little beretta 32, a walther p99, a springfield operator, and let us shoot his ammo! the rifles may not strictly need cleaning, but i don't feel right returning them dirty. besides, it would be interesting to take them apart.

so what do i need to do? what constitutes field stripping for these beasties? i presume there's more to do than just wipe down the outside and clean out the bore.

Your one stop shop for all things SKS. Scroll down all the way on the bottom right hand side and there are 2 videos...at least one goes over breaking down an SKS.

As for an AK. Push the button on the back of the reciever in and push up on it, the top pops off.

Remove the spring.

Pull the bolt back until it is out.

clean the barrel.

As for the gas piston, the rear sight has a little lever...it's flat on on side and slightly rounded on the other. If you rotate it to where it is flat (you won't see this because its in the inside) but just rotate the lever straight up and down until the gas tube is released. Remove piston, clean it and the tube. Reverse assembly. It's really easy. Like, grab a potato farmer from Russia who can't read, call him a soldier and even he can disassemble the thing.;)

Edit: DANG I got beat to it.
