--or finding someone to do the job?

I've searched on a fair few sites and googled the heck out of it and all I've been able to find are 5/8-24.

The upper is Rock River Arms.

Do you know anyone with a lathe?

A 5/8-32 tap is about $25. It would take about 1/2 hour to make one if you had the tap, probably hard to find anyone that would want to fool with it if they had to single point the threads.

    I've made a lot of 1/2-28 and 1/2-36 thread protectors, but I don't have a 5/8-32 tap.

PM me if nobody else comes up with anything for you.

Or purchase some plastic caps for protesting external threads and cut a hole.

Since I'm not familiar with the SOCOM I'll have to ask what threads you are trying to protect?
My assumption is that it is a muzzle break/suppressor type thing.
A 5/8 -32 tap is of course not that common and only a real speciality shop will have one.
How about a Delrin or Nylon bushing that will just push on and off.
Carefull with that thread in any case as it IS a fine thread that you don't want to cross thread.
    brickeye has the right idea.
