If anyone is still interested, I went to the range today and the white paint pen dots worked just okay.
Like Soupy44 surmised there was considerable flaking even though these weren’t white out.
And besides once the cases were lying on the floor and dirty the dots weren’t highly visible anyway.
So I’m going to stick with standard sharpie ink in the future—circles around the case body.
