How do you measure Length-of-pull?

Hi. I'm looking at trying to get a rifle for my wife, and I don't know if I should go the full-size or youth-size route. I guess the main difference comes down to length-of-pull.

Unfortunetaly, none of my local stores(even Wal-mart) have a youth size gun instock for comparison. So what I was wondering, is, is Length-of-pull simply the distance from the trigger to the end of the stock? Because, that would be easy to measure.

Yes.

But a much more difficult question is what is the proper LOP for the shooter. In my experience, it is not as much of an issue with a rifle as it is with a shotgun.

FWIW, both of my kids have used full size rifles since about the age of 12 with no problems.

Length of pull is measured from the center of the trigger to the center of the buttplate. A good test for a rifle for an individual shooter is to turn the forearm (the person's forearm, that is) palm up, parallel to the ground, then lay the rifle on it with the stock along the forearm, trigger guard outward and the butt firmly against the upper arm. Bend the trigger finger as if firing, and bring it into the trigger guard. If it falls naturally on the trigger, the LOP is OK for that person.
