How have you planned supplies?

I'm sorry I read this thread. :(

It confirmed my suspicions about what is happening to me. I just started collecting reloading supplies and feel like I have pitifully inadequate stock. Especially brass. Now I'm spending more money to "save money" on reloading. :cuss:

I have about 20,000 loaded rifle and pistols rounds and 10,000 22LR rounds. I feel this is barely adequate. :uhoh:

Component wise, I have collected the following:

1,500 .223 boolits
1,000 cast 45 ACP boolits
300 jacketed 45 ACP boolits
500 cast 38 Special boolits
300 jacketed 38 Special boolits
1,000 jacketed 9mm boolits

1,000 SP magnum primers
2,000 LP primers
2,000 SP primers
2,000 SR primers
10 pounds pistol powder
8 pounds rifle power

600 45 ACP brass
4,000 9mm brass
400 30-06 brass
1,000 .223 brass
400 357 brass
600 38 Special brass

And I just got back from Lowes where I bought a couple pieces of heavy plywood for a new workbench top. I have two pieces of the plywood glued, screwed and clamped together right now. Later I'll sand it and put a coat of acrylic poly on it. Then I can mount my press as I've yet to reload a single round but I hope to produce some 9mm or 38 Special rounds on my new workbench tonight. I've been tumbling brass for the last few daze.

This can get crazy but I'm not planning on buying anything else till I get my tax return or the next economic stimulus check from Uncle Sam.

:)

Mike,
I think you'll be covered for a while, and not need to spend too much more on shooting. While your buddies are talking about the high cost of ammo. You can be shooting away without a care for the cost of loaded ammo.
I gotta say damn, that's alot of supplies to be starting out with.

I've been planning this for years... :)

Anyways, I really don't like the whole idea of stocking up in case of legislative restrictions that may be on the horizon.

It feels too much like surrender but what the heck are you supposed to do besides vote?

I stock up on supplies to the point that I can load a bunch of rounds at any given time. I try to treat my reloading cabinet like a pantry.

I've got several recipes I can mix up at any given time. I routinely buy large quantities to reduce overall costs and frequently jump at online ad deals, particularly gunbroker.com and midway.

Do I think of "how long will this last me", no, I just stock up when I find a deal or need to stock the bullet pantry if you will. Most common consumption items for me are pistol powders and bullets. Also the .223 fodder.

NC-Mike:

There is another vote that we get that we're often lied to about and/or do everything we can to avoid:

jury duty:what:

Yup. They will instruct you to decide on the facts of the case and leave the law interpretation to his/her honor. What complete BS. The founders envisioned the law on trial as well, the final check and balance before revolution. Pass whatever law you want, an informed populace can refuse to convict. Go figure.

I hate jury duty. Thank God they didn't pick me out of the pool last time. I only had to give them one day and then they won't summon you again for three years.

I buy what I can when I can afford it. I have no idea how many primers, brass, lb's of powder or bullets I have. I have 8 5 gal buckets of brass, 3 4ft long boxes of primers and bullets under the bed in my spare bedroom, and a cabinet full of powder. I just turned 55 last week. When I retire, I'm going to stop buying reloading supplies and see if I can shoot it all up before I go to the big range in the sky.:D

I've found over time if when you open a 8lb jug of powder it lasts quite long if you fill a 1lb jug and use it for reloading instead of opening the 8lb jug a lot. Of course I recommend you only use the correct jug for the powder you're using so accidents won't happen. Just be sure to save a 1lb jug of any powder you buy in the big containers and all will be well.

If I could just jot a list of components or loaded rounds I have on hand at any given time to this little thread, then I certainly wouldn't have enough on hand to support my shooting habbits for even a year. Some of which involve binge shooting.

I have drawers full of primers. Pounds of powders. Ammo cans full of brass in various stages. Boxes of bullets for various calibers. Boxes and boxes of loaded cartriges.

If 'S H T' were to ever really hit the fan, I've got friends with more, and my reloading presses would be put in to double time.

Other than that, I'll be reloading more this winter in preparation for spring time matches.

I really try not to worry to much about them trying to ban or restrict ammo and components. I'd go nuts and be BROKE if I did.

I try to buy when I get the best deals and sales. I always buy in bulk for the savings plus I dont run out on a saturday night trying to load up for sunday. I cast my own bullets so running out of those is not really an issue and I keep around 500 lbs of lead in ingots ready to cast from at all times and usually have 1000-1500 lbs WW lead in big barrels just waiting to be melted. I do try to keep about 5000 bullets cast for each cal. I own (currently about 25,000 bullets) just so I dont have to stop production and cast.

Well I am starting to ramble so, basically I just buy bulk at a good deal as much as I can afford at a time.(I also have a VERY understanding wife, which helps a lot!!) I know a few wives who would nut up if their hubby came home and wanted to drop 1000$ into primers and powder at one shot!
