How is the slide stop spring retained on Browning Medalist/Challenger?

    I finally tracked down the proper (I presume) slide stop spring for my Challenger, but can't figure it out and I don't want the spring to go flying across the room. The rear of the slide stop has a notch that I presume one end of the spring rides in... anyone here know which way the spring goes? Does the curved center of the spring wrap around the post of the slide stop latch or something?

    If anyone has a Medalist and wouldn't mind posting a pic of the area or simply taking a look at their slide stop and letting me know which way the spring is oriented that would be great!

    It may... I looked at exploded diagrams on the web but that one looks different than the others I saw. The spring looks a bit different too. The one I got is a full "U" with a curvy bit on one end. I already bought an incorrect one from the Buckmark as someone on the parts site said the springs were interchangeable (they aren't).

    Dang it...


    thanks for the help. I know there are some medalist/challenger owners here, so hopefully somebody will be so kind as to unscrew the grip and take a good look for me.:cool:

    IIRC, the top part of that "S" curve fits into the groove in the end of the hammer pin, and the straight part bears down on the little projection on the inside of the slide stop. But I am confused by what you say about the "U" shape, which sounds more like a Buckmark.

    Just remember the idea is to keep the slide stop down until the mag follower pushes it up. When you get the spring so it does that, you probably have it in right.

    Thanks... that might help. I'll take another look. Maybe I'm remembering incorrectly.

    The "V-joint" of the spring doesn't wrap around a pin or anything, does it? It's just basically held in by tension, correct?

    Bump... I finally tracked down the right part I believe... anyone know a source for dis/reassembly instructions for a browning challenger? Please help... this pistol has not been working correctly for 20 years.

    by disassembly instructions I mean not an exploded diagram. or at least some idea of what order the parts should be removed/installed.

    Well I got it back together... I'm posting in case someone in the future happens upon this thread with a similar problem to mine. Thanks to all.

    After a very lengthy and expensive search I finally located a slide stop spring for my Browning Challenger (it was lost when I was a teenager and the pistol hasn't worked properly since).

    Thanks to you guys and the rimfirecentral.com folks I had a general idea of where the spring went but it took a bit of trying to figure it out. The smaller loop clips into a groove at the end of the hammer pin, and the lower loop has to sort of be squeezed into a space that seems too small at first, but which gives it the necessary tension to hold the slide stop down against the force of recoil until it's overcome by the stronger magazine spring as the magazine empties.

    Note: to get the safety click plate off, you move the safety lever down past the "off" position and that allows the click plate to be lifted up off the hammer pin.

    I also replaced the front sight pin which was also lost many years ago. Feels good!
