How long do I have to live in the states before I can get a gun?

I live in the UK, and am considering moving to the US (God-willing) after I graduate from university.

As a lot of laws seem to vary from state to state, I imagine it is different everywhere, Massachusetts, Oregon and California would probably the states I was most interested in.

I am also aware that gun laws and ages vary from state to state, in terms of age, and the legality of OC, and CC.

Providing I could get a green card, any ideas?

Yes, different States have different laws concerning aliens and firearms. Attached is a brochure of some rules.

But generally, a nonimigrant alien will need , of course a valid visa, maybe a hunting license and at least 90 days of residence at that particular state. Green card holders just need a 90 days proof of residence of the state. WA state has finally joined the other 49 states in allowing green card holsters own firearms without an Aliens Firearms License.

I think you already know which states to avoid (NY, CA, NJ, MA). As soon as you're there long enough to get ID, you're good to buy a gun. Get an AK send home pictures of you holding it

Though the other guy has a point. I mean I'd avoid NJ anyway lol, but that's probably because of Futurama...

But the others all seem to have very strict restrictions on owning guns. Which is fine, permit holders have very low tendencies towards gun crime.

After you get your green card, 90 days proof of residence is of course only for purchases from a Federal Firearms Licensee (Dealer).

Private sales vary greatly from state to state, anywhere from doing a background check and getting a permit beforehand to just showing a drivers license and exchanging a wad of cash.

Some states have fewer regulations on rifles and shotguns, compared to handguns. You might be able to buy a rifle or shotgun from an individual (not a FFL) in less than 90 days, in the state where you are residing.
