Is the Cold Steel blackthorn molded all in one piece of plastic?

I guess it should be at least as durable as a plastic night stick the police use.

I'm in my 60s and have some minor ankle and shoulder issues. Up until last week I hadn't given much thought to using a cane, but I went out and bought a sturdy hickory crook, even though I don't really need it to hoof around.

I just like the notion of having something in those circumstances when I can't legally carry.

Once you get one you find uses for tons of things.

I bought my Nasco stock cane two years ago purely for use as a confiscation proof defensive weapon. Just weeks after shaping the crook, cutting the length, and staining, it came in real handy when a Lab attacked my Shi-tzu. Two weeks ago for the first time in my life I experienced sciatica pain so severe high doses of NSAIDs and the cane were necessary for me to walk any distance. I think it is time to buy another cane so I have one to use and one to lose.

Carl, You're just a kid! LOL - just turned 63. I received my CS Blackthorn 2 days ago. Its molded onepiece of polypropelene. Heavy! (28 oz), and the faux rootball handle is not as comfortable as the derby handled or crook handle cases. It will pass TSA, but needs a tip (over sized, probably a chair not a cane tip). It is brutal!

Non de Forum, Check out the NASCO elephant cane (1-1/8 in. diam, $12, the stock cane is 7/8 in.

If you've seen the "Cane-Do" website ... they sell a fighting cane (1" diam oak with extra wide crook, special grip grooves on the ends, gloss finish, crook end narrow to dig into flesh) for about $100. I got one that is identical (but made of Oriental hardwood) for 1/4 of the price. Caveat Emptor!

I'll have to take a picture of my collection and post it.

Thanks for the recommendation but I am way ahead of you. About an hour before you posted I order two heavy rounds and one elephant cane from NASCO. They are so inexpensive that for the same shipping price you might as well order more than one. I am completely pleased by the heavy round I already have so why not to more, but I also decided I wanted "to see the elephant" pun intended.:D

Game of billiards anyone?

I carry a cane at all times...need to. :scrutiny:

Here are two I made with pool balls. Obviously a cue ball and eight ball. The shafts are 36" x 1" oak. The balls add another 2" for 38" overall length.

I've owned one of th0se NASCO elephant canes for years now. It is substantially heavier than their regular cane. The regular canes are roughly circular in diameter but the elephant is oval as it has at least 1/2 more mass than the regular canes. The elephant is so much stouter that you can really bash with it, more so than the regular. It is more like swinging and striking with a baseball bat rather than a baton.

Visually, it doesn't look much different than a regular cane so carry & use won't get additional scrutiny.

Unfortunately, the extra weight makes it bothersome (for me) to actually carry, and because it is so much thicker, you won't be able to use a regular slip-on rubber foot, but will have to make or order a screw-in type of rubber tip for this monster.

I use it as a heavy weight practice cane.

To lighten a really heavy cane, you could use a cabinet scraper to put a bit of taper on the bottom 1/2 of the shaft. If you go slow, you won't remove all that much wood, but it will be where you feel it most when carrying a cane.

All my best,
Dirty Bob

At Lowes or Home Depot, you an get a chair leg cap that's almost perfect for the tip of most over wide canes. Problem is, sometimes they only have them in white! LOL. That's fine for a kitchen stool base, but on a cane? The Cold Steel Blackthorn needs a 1-1/8 in. I have to buy one, 'cause the tip is a hard plastic, and a bit slick on some surfaces. Plus its noisy! (Pirate peg-leg "Step, tap ... step, tap) They sell them in a 2 pack for about $2 or so.

The one inch black tip from Home Depot fits my Cold Steel Blackthorn just fine.

I tried and could not fit the 1" tip I have from my custom oak derby cane, I used a caliper to measure the diameter at the top of the "tip" area of the CS Blackthorn, and it was 1-1/8".

I know ... I need to get pictures posted. Sorry. I will.

Guys, you can also go to a medical supply store and look at crutch tips. They come in various sizes for canes, crutches, and walkers. And they are mostly in black.:)

I got a sweet family owned hardware store that I go to for my cane feet. They have a 4 foot section about chest high with then from 1/4 inch up to nearly 3
Inches. In Black and white.

Sorry for the delay. The stand I made, glue only ... poplar. The canes - CS Blackthorn, Custom made Oak derby, Harvy carbon fiber derby, CD sword, Brass duck head Oak 2 piece, and Custom martial arts large crook
