    Y=X+1 only works for single folks
    For married folks tbe formula is
    Y=N-1 where N= Divorce

    If you have to ask the question, you usually know the answer ;).

    If you know how many that you have, then you do not have enough. Keep trying. Remember that he who has the most toys when he dies wins.

    I didn’t get a positive integer? I think I remember how to do these right... Also, from whence came 10 power 6 in the denominator of the first parentheses?

    Also... I seem to have more guns than this equation would provide... so I just tell my wife, “One of each, and maybe two or three of just my favorites.”

    A buddy has a walk-in armored vault.

    He has about one hundred mint or near-mint milsurps inside, with 31,000 rds. of centerfire ammo.

    But if you were to judge him by his very faded pickup truck and nondescript clothing, you would never guess that he knows how to successfully invest in mutual funds plus various stocks.

    He never needed to ask for permission to buy his many guns - alll milsurps..

    I am past the mid point of my seventh decade, thus I find my self doing less shooting. We haven't touched the target rifles in several years along with the shotguns. This leaves me shooting handguns on my handgun range on the property. The handgun shooting is basically 10-7 & 3 yards defensive style in nature. With that said I'm a land share owner in a shooting association. I'm contemplating selling my land share stock. In my life time I've shoot enough 45ACP to fill several 55-Gal drums with the empties. The only constant in life is change.

    I'll take a shot at it from a couple different angles.
    First, as many as can be brought home while maintaining the significant others happiness...for me this is endless as long as I pay the bills. She after all had me make several bouquets of bullet flowers for our wedding reception, so that ones a non-issue.

    Second, combining the number I currently own with the number on my "need" list (guns that I have at some point seen or heard about that I had at least a mild interest in, and I keep a physical list of these) bring the number to approximately 160. I'm about half way there.

    Third angle, one should have these at least;
    1. 22 pistol for fun and learning with kids and small game.
    2. 22 rifle youth size same reasons as above.
    3. Full size 22 rifle so you can shoot along with the kiddos.
    4. small caliber center fire rifle for varmints
    5. midsize caliber rifle for deer size game.
    6. large caliber rifle for dangerous and large game.
    7. 28"+ magnum shotgun for ducks geese ect.
    8. 24" shotgun for doves, squirrels ect..
    9. short barrel home defence shotgun.
    10. battle rifle x number of willing and able people in your household chambered in appropriate cartridges and sized appropriately for each individual to wield effectively.
    11. light weight bug out gun of some kind with enough oomph for defense and hunting, and enough of these to arm willing and able members of your household. the rifles under number 10 may fit this role in some cases.
    12. large caliber magnum handgun for defence against large dangerous critters.
    13. muzzleloader for muzzleloading season.
    14. conceal carry handgun X number in household able to use one.
    15. Full size open carry handgun for those times where you need to openly support and exercise 2nd amendment rights.

    in my case from angle three, I should have at least 30.

    I don't know. Thats like asking a woman how many shoes they can have. Theres no answer. Both are like stray cats. They just keep multiplying.

    The correct answer to the equation of how many guns I should own is a complicated problem. You take the square root of your social security number, round it to the nearest whole number, then multiply by 1 more than the number of pets you have had after you raise that to the power equal to the number of kids who claim you as a parent.

    I am worried I may be approaching the limit.

    Went to gun show, this morning

    Seen less than 5 guns i had any interest in owning. That interest was minimal
    Bought nothing. No regrets.

    Now, I am beginning to worry.

    Wow, that IS complicated! It would have been even more complicated for me way back when I had guns, but didn't have a social security number yet.;)
