What did they do in WWI and WWII when lefty soldiers had to use bolt action rifles? I can't imagine lefty being very proficient with bolt action.

Now a days, the problem resurfaces with bullpups, unless shells go downwards, they typically come out to the cheek if shooting left handed.

    Another lefty here.

Pistols are shot mostly right handed, my concealed carry piece is right side about 4 o'clock. Rifles and shotguns left, I have learned to shoot right handed with a fair amount of accuracy, but left is more comfortable.

bolt action sucks, I do pretty good with it though. I gave sadam 2 full open nose holes...I think I am better with long guns than pistols...strange, I am just strange...

Ever see Saving Private Ryan? The sniper is left handed. Does the ole shoot and reload with the left hand over the scope routine.

Southpaw here. I do most everything lefty, except golf (on the rare occasion I hit the links). I was taught by my grandfather, who only had RH clubs.

To answer the question what LH shooters did when our armed forces used bolt guns, the answer is they shot right handed, AFAIK. They were taught to shoot RH in boot/basic.

I can't make up my mind, either. I write, eat, play the drums and shoot long guns lefty; bat/golf, throw, play the guitar and shoot handguns righty (with the right eye). Shooting a handgun righty works out real well, since I get to use my fine-control hand to handle the magazines.

i'm left handed, left eye dominant. never really bothered me, never had any problems with shells ejecting at me. only problem i've ever had was with my mosin nagant m44. the first time i took it out, i held the gun with my left hand (didn't move the hand anywhere except for getting my finger away from the trigger) while manipulating the bolt with my right. then when i pulled the bolt back and brought it forward, it took a chunk of my thumb with it. that sure taught me to use my left hand to manipulate the bolt.

Left handed southpaw. I can write with the right if I had to but I'm well suited to be a teacher. I can write backwards and upside down so the person on the other side of the table doesn't have to sit next to me. What a great job skill for a person who isn't a teacher.

    I am right handed.

I shoot pistol either way, but am slightly better right handed. When it comes to long guns, they just dont feel right unless I am shooting left.

    Lefty

I learned to shoot right handed with my pistol as the first pistol I had was a hi-point 9mm. If I try to shoot that one lefthanded it drops the magazine on the ground. I later picked up a CZ52 and found I could shoot that one with either hand. Same goes for the Makarov.

The safety on the CZ52 and Mak are much less intuitive lefthanded though.

My SKS(yugo) tends to work better for me lefthanded. My groups are tighter. I can shoot it right handed though as that was what I started out as before I decided to try it lefthanded.

I would think lefties would favor military pistols due to the magazine release being less likely to be activated by accident.

I have never shot a bolt action rifle so I do not know how that would work lefthanded. In my experience most lefties can work their right hand a lot better than righties can work their left hand.

I am left handed, right eye dominant. My mom is convinced that I was born a righty, but chose to emulate my Dad and older brother (both lefties). As such...I've also lead a confused life.

Golf, Baseball (batting), Hockey - Right handed.
Football, Baseball (throwing), etc. - Left Handed.
    Kicking - Left footed.
Pistols - clearly left handed...I just tilt my head to line up my good eye.
Rifles - Somewhat ambi. I shot an entire college riflery course righty (you had to shoot class guns and they only had right handed biathalon style .22s) and got an "A". I routinely shoot rifles righty for kicks at the range....however, only for accuracy....any tacticool action would end up being awkward right handed.

Looking for guns to fit a lefty can be a pain in the @55!!! :banghead:

I'm a SouthPaw too. Left-handed, left-footed, and right-eye dominate. I learned to shoot right-handed with an air rifle. Handguns left-handed and long guns right-handed. When I target shoot I do with both hands ;)

I'm mostly ambi. I write left-handed but can write with my right; bat/swing right-handed. I shoot with either hand and use either eye, however.

Ditto. I write with the left- eat with both - prefer to shoot a handgun with my right- prefer to shoot a long gun with my left. My right eye is slightly dominant...but after having lasik surgery, there is not much difference.

    Sinister!

Left handed, left eyed, left footed....

Fortunately, life experience corrected early lefty political tendencies.

I learned to shoot with a bolt action at the local NRA Junior program.
Reaching over the action was such a pain I switched to the right shoulder for long gun shooting, a situation which I have only recently reversed.

Like many lefties, I can shoot handguns equally well from either hand.

My lifelong aversion to bolt actions probably stems from that childhood trauma. :scrutiny:

On the bright side, I might never have discovered falling block single shots if I'd been a righty. :D

I guess I ain't that unusual after all. I write and eat left-handed; most other stuff I do right-handed. I can shoot just as poorly with either. After shooting pistols a few months righty which felt right, I decided to shoot lefty. I switched hands on the gun and kept right on with my left shooting just how I'd left off with my right. :neener:
