Since we already got one "huh, what the heck", I guess I'm obliged to explain:

A C&R is a class 3 Federal Firearms Licence (a dealer is class 1) that allows one to legally aquire firearms that are condisered "Curios or Relics" via interstate commerce. For example as a C&R Licencee, I'm allowed to purchase a 1943 M1 Carbine from anybody who is legally allowed to sell one and have them ship it right to my home. I can also sell sell and ship said carbine to a class 01 FFL licencee or another class 03 licencee.

Another benefit of getting a C&R licence is you can purchase right from the wholesalers where dealers get their import stuff. Obviously, you get stuff at a great discout over dealer and gunshow price. Some parts warehouses give 03 FFL licencees discounts also.

The only caveats are, you can not buy to sell. All purchases must be for your own collection, although you can sell or trade off firearms you get tired of or ones that you feel don't fit your needs. You must also keep a "bound book" record of all purchases and dispositions of C&R firearms. This book may be examined by the BATF by appointment, but I have yet to hear of anybody who has had their books examined.

C&R firearms are any firearms over 50 years old and/or unique and of collector interest (Yugo SKS and CZ-52s are good examples). The BATF maintains a large list of C&R firearms:
    http://www.atf.treas.gov/firearms/curios/index.htm

To apply, fill out the application and make two copies, then sign them both. Send one copy to the ATF with a check for $30. Send the other to your local Sheriff or Police Chief (whichever has juristiction for your home) with instructions to file. It does not require their approval or even any notice that they received it. The licence is good for three years.

    Here's the application form:
    http://www.atf.treas.gov/forms/pdfs/print2.htm

Applying for and using one is way easy. Paying off the credit cards will be the hard part!

I got mine about a year ago.

After you send copies to C&R dealers, you receive monthly wholesale flyers with both C&R and non C&R specials.

If I find something I want that's not C&R I just have it shipped to my FFL.

I still get the wholsale price, and just pay a $25 transfer fee. Which still comes out to way less than I could buy it for at a gun shop.

I don't have one yet, but I actually downloaded the PDF format application today. Since most of the guns I get lately are old milsurps, I figure that if I get a C&R license, it'll pay for itself with the first gun I get.

I'm considering a C&R license and have some questions.
Does it matter what color the paper you print the forms out on is? I read somewhere that the paper has to be green.
Where do you get copies of your license to send to dealers? Do send away to the ATF?
How different for the process for buying full auto C&R guns?

How hard is it to get a FFL Dealers license? I would assume its WAYY more expensive, otherwise gun stores would be extinct :p

I had one until recently but I never used it. Having kids at home I didn't want any guns shipped without me being home and the kids would be. They say adult signature for UPS but I've never seen it enforced. Also buying C&R guns sight unseen did not and does not seem wise to me.

Print the form on white paper.
Most of the dealers I've dealt with have excellent return policies, but be sure to tune into the C&R forums before making purchases. The good deals are highly praised and the bad deals are loudly bashed.

    ShaiVong,

To get a Dealer - 01-FFL these days requires you to have an actual storefront and set up an actual business. That includes all applicable business licenses, tax forms and insurance.

The days of a having an FFL to get yourself and friends guns at wholesale price are gone forever. The 03-FFL is still better than nothing and each year, a large number of guns become qualified as C&R.

Yep, I have mine and I LOVE IT!!!:D It has saved me enough in transfer fees ALONE to pay for the license for the next 68+ years.

Wow! Almost 90% said they either have or want one. No wonder all those really good deals don't last long! :D

YeP, got one of 'em 03 (C&R) FFL.

For those folks who are planning on applying for a type 03 (C&R) license make sure to include a certificate of elgibility in your application. I believe it is required right after 9/11.

TeleWinz, most of the distributors out there like Century Arms are using a grading system such as -excellent/verygood/good/fair/u-fix-'em on their rifles and handguns. I find the grading system to be fairly accurate when receiving the rifles and handguns.

HKmp5sd, Not really. If you have an extra office space within your business then you can use that as a store front for an 01 FFL. I manage a 3 state network ops. center and used a small office space within one of our offices in OKC for an 01 FFL, it is under a company name though not mine.

    *8*,

Yep. But the kitchen table or desk in the den no longer works. I used to have an FFL with my house as the premises, but I let it go about 10 years ago and just kept my C&R.

This is about 80% of my C&R pistol collection, so you can see that I've used my C&R WAY too much! :D:D
