Darn 338, I know why I hate it! My shoulder is tender

Its my primary hunting rifle, Sako Mannlicher Carbine restocked with a Rimrock Stock and a 2.5-8 Leupold. Only has a 18 1/2 in barrel and weighs 7 1/2 pounds.

Shoots 1/2 inch groups with 250 Noslers, did it today. But dang it, the kick is soooooooo nasty I just hate shooting it... (Spiff liked it but he is...well...Spifflike)...

But its the go to gun, and Im goin bear huntin! Hopefully just one shot...

And Spiff since I know you will raise it, yes the scope has an inch of dust on the objective lens, yes the peeling wax coating on the barrel and metal makes it look leperous and yes the trigger is kind of light....

Dumb I know, just would hate for something to happen.

Same reason I'm going to retire my Win Super X Model 1. Oh and after who knows how many rounds, figure it needs a rest. 25K rds a years for a LOT of years it deserves it. I last shot 100/100...retire with no misses seemed appropriate. Still has lots of rds left in it. Just...Just time to retire, is all.

Tell anyone I'm sentimental - I'll deny it. ;)
 
I can't say that i enjoy shooting .357 defense loads from snubbies. But, i know i have to practice if thats what im gonna carry.
 
Beretta 85f in .380

Its a cool little gun, but every time I take it to the range the slide comes back and slices my hand open. I know because of the way I hold it, coupled with the fact that its just to small for this big meaty claw of mine, but its not worth it to bleed to shoot a pistol when I have other that don't hurt me.
 
Wild, consider a muzzle brake of some sort. Any sort!

My .338 Lapua is an Armalite AR-30, and the thing has such an effective brake that it's like shooting a .243. Except a 250gr pops out at above 3,000fps!

I really love shooting all my guns. Probally too much.
 
Mine is a little more esoteric - a T/C Hawken with hooked brass buttplate and crooked stock. Load er up with a Maxi Ball ahead of a couple heaping teaspoons of FFG and it'll almost make you cry. Shoulder as well as cheekbone gets a WHACK. Still, it'll make a man of you. :eek:

Art we install probably 300 brakes a year here (of our own desing and very effective)..

They work extrmely well....knocks down about 65% of recoil...

But aesthetically.....bleh:barf:

I hate the way brakes look on a gun with sights, sticking out the end there, and it I do it integral I lose 2 inches more of barrel. Might as well get a 338/06 then.

Now of course I like the way flash hiders look...

Naw, Ill just buy another box of 250 Feds, fires 2-3 more shots to get it locked on, clean off the scope and wait till something live crosses me path to shoot it again.

Yep...my 642 gets carried a lot and I practice with it enough to be fairly proficient, but I hate to pull that trigger.

Darn thing feels like a wasp sting every shot.

I'd rather shoot one of my .44 mags all afternoon.
 
the muzzle blast was quite impressive, and the 19 squeals of anguish led me to believe that little 338 was an elephant gun. so when i lined up the crosshairs and started settling my finger on the trigger (if i was smart, i'd have dryfired it once to see how the trigger broke, but nooo, i was still in my 2-stage-mauser mindset) and the round set off about a second before i intended.

felt good. got a nice soft rubber butt pad on it. i think WA gave me a light load to try, theres no way that recoil could be called 'painful'.

i think i know what to get WA for his birthday though: a slip on recoil reducing buttpad for his winchester .22, maybe even two of them to save his tender shoulder.
 
I was just talking about it yesterday...

Mossberg 12ga, 18" bbl., pistol grip only. Keep it close to hand while I'm sleeping. I imagine it would be an excellent piece for home defense, but Man! do I hate to practice with it. Been meaning to get a shoulder stock for it.

Heh heh...my wife has a Smith with the shrouded hammer (is that the 629?) that ain't much fun. I druther shoot my Blackhawk .44 any time.
 
A NEF 12 ga. It is my turkey gun. It shoots 3 inch shells and I wanna cry after two shots. I think thats why I haven't gotten a turkey in the last three years. :D

.54 T/C Hawken can indeed be a shoulder-breaker.

You have to hold it just right or that brass buttplate can really thump you.
 
Marlin level-action in 30-30. That gun weighs less than 3 pounds. Every shot is like getting punched by Mike Tyson.

Have you ever been punched by Mike Tyson? I think being punched by Mike Tyson is a good thing. After the fight, you go to the bank to cash the multi-million dollar check. :D
 
WA.... you need to change your nick to WAAAH :D

Maybe you should try shooting that thing more often. Do what the lead character in the book "Unintended Consequences" did. Shoot more often, grow a callus on your shoulder and get it trimmed by the doctor occassionally. ;)

Whoa... :uhoh: I must be doing something wrong! :D

No, I enjoy my guns. However, my Dad's .270 deer rifle just doesn't sit right against my shoulder. Every time I end up with a big bruise and a sore arm.
