How many revolver speed loaders do you have?

Off topic question. I've never fired a revolver in competition. Doesn't the cylinder, forcing cone, and area where you're hand is located get really hot or is it bearable for the 3 or so reloads?
In IDPA there’s a 24 round max that a revolver shooter can carry. And you’re only shooting once every 30 to 45 minutes, so no it doesn’t get too hot. Even in ICORE or USPSA or Steel Challenge it’s still only 25-35 per stage. In practice session however you can easily put 50 rounds down range in <5 minutes so the revolver can very hot after a couple of boxes of ammo. That’s why I carry a fan that use between drills. It also helps I have a backup gun and can alternate too.

I would get DQ'd then - I reload by holding the revolver upright, slapping the ejector rod down with the free hand which then snags the speedloader, and slips it in while the shooting hand tips the gun down. Twist, release and let the closing cylinder sweep the now empty speedloader onto the ground. IIRC, I learned that one from a Massad Ayoob tale, and it works very well for me.

Too many.

For defensive revolvers, three per gun - one for range practice, two for carry. Then there are the try-'em-out brands that didn't work out, and the legacy loaders I don't use anymore.

"Outdoorsman" and hunting revolvers, just one each.

That's a lot of speed-loaders. And it doesn't include speed-strips, that's another category.

Three per gun or per platform? If, for example, you had 5 K-frames and 15 speed loaders already and then you purchased new K-frame, do mean you'd buy 3 more speed loaders for a total of 18?

Well, my 4" Model 10-14 HB gets loaded with .38/44 equivalent loads. My older pre-Model 10 gets loaded with Remington 158 SWCHP +P. To keep the ammo straight I use Safariland Comp II for one load and HKS 10A for the other.

And then there are the J frames, in both .38 and .32. And the N frames in .357, .41 and .44. And the Colts. And the Rugers.

As I said, it's a lot of speed loaders...

Ok, the auto-loaders got their own magazine thread so it's time the revolvers get theirs.

How many speed loaders do you have per gun?

I ask because I was tired of finding them all over the house so started consolidating them into one bin, a separate labeled bag per type.

Thus far I have found I don't have as many as I thought! Yet another order to be worked up.

How many per revolver is enough for you?
I've lost count!

Zero. I'm not in law enforcement or competitive shooting.
Law enforcement doesn't carry revolvers or speed loaders*, and most competitive shooters opt for moon clips. Either way, I'm not sure why one would have to be law enforcement or a competitive shooter to carry a fast reload, especially when you're capacity limited.

* I'm sure someone seen a sheriff in a small town in Mayberry somewhere that they can anecdotally point to, but that's an outlier.

Moon clips. 100+. I carry at least 3 and keep the others loaded with practice ammo. TK Custom. Their moon clips are the best and their revolver smith business is top notch.

Probably about 20 to 24. Since I am shooting revolvers more these days, I will pick up some more.

Jim

I have one five shot speedloader for a J frame .38. It's a woods walking revolver. Not for matches or other high volume events.

I have found that brass five shot strippers for 7.62x51 will hold 5 .38 Spl and with a little practice I learned to load a five shot cylinder stripping two-two-one.

I believe I have about 1 1/2 or 2 pounds of moon clips for my ACP revolvers. Always looking for more!

I thank the IDPA staff photog for the picture. Brass falling away cleanly, already reaching for the reload. (686 4" with .38spl brass)
Couldn't imagine loading a revolver under duress without speed loaders
Now I wish I hadn't withdrawn...we could have met...but my hip replacement wasn't willing to be put off

I shot PPC when the PMA was less strict about non cop entries.
Time limits are generous with speedloaders but would have been tough with dump pouches and belt slides.

Well, the last two 32 caliber speed loaders came in tonight so I can finally say I have enough. At least two for each revolver I own.

Couple for the Python. Have a couple left over from when I was into 629s. Guess that warrants another Smith LOL

HKS, 2 or 4 for each swingout revolver I own.
Safariland, 2 or 4 for each I can find one for.
No pachmayr ones
5 star a 2 or 3 for the ones I can't find a hks or Safariland for.

I keep finding speed loaders, occasionally, in long-forgotten places. I have no idea how many speed loaders I have. Forty years of DA revolver shooting and carry will cause that to happen. S&W .44 and .41 N-Frames. S&W .38/.357 L-Frames and K-Frames. S&W/Ruger .38/.357 SP101 and J-Frames. Ruger Security/Speed Sixes. HKS, mostly, plus more than a few Safariland. I have brought ten or more HKS K-Frame speed loaders to day-long training classes, in the Nineties.

That's what started this for me - finding speedloaders, especially in long forgotten places. Usually after I had just bought more! I bought the first back in the early 90s and have never been very good at staying organized.

Finally decided to keep them in their own dedicated bin with an inventory list. Except for the .32s I had at least two for each revolver which seemed reasonable as I don't play the shooting games. Then night before last I found four more! I'll probably find one in my sock drawer if ever I empty it out...
