possom813 20 + tax at the local pawn shop
Any dealer in Texas who is charging sales tax on the transfer fee is scamming you...........the Texas Comptrollers Office specifically exempts firearm transfers from sales tax.

Not all states contact FBI NICS for background checks, those states that use a state agency/state police/etc as "point of contact" for background checks often charge a fee for that service. Dealers in some states are charged for every call regardless of the outcome.

FBI NICS is a free call, free service.

FFL's in some states don't call NICS, they call a state system that accesses NICS and some additional state databases. Those states, such as CT, VA, TN, and CA, charge a fee for every background check that is run.

If you're in a state where the FFL contacts NICS directly, then there is no additional charge to run the background check.

Geesh... I can understand some charging an uplift for "new" guns they could have ordered for you. However, old guns that are not being produced/collector pieces/ or any other odd ball that someone wants is highway robbery..
That is more profit than I make on the sale of a new gun. There is no way that I would patronize a business that did that.

Going rate here in the Detroit area was $20, but that was when I had mine in the 90s. Now I would expect $30-$40, but I don't know. Generally, I buy mine new or from a LGS or gun show, so I don't normally get charged.

20 transfer, 10 background
The shops that charge $50 are always dead and the shop that charges $20 had the best selection and us always busy.

Here in CA, the usual is $75-100, but I found a guy that works our of his home that will do it for $50, the best deal I've found.

In oregon the local pawn shop does it for $20=$10 fee + $10 background check, if receiving multiple guns $10 a gun and 10 once for the background

FFL dealers in my area charge between $25 and $50 for a transfer which includes a $10 state NICS fee. They normally only charge the $10 fee for guns that they are selling from their inventory. I have not run into any "free" services, but I have not contacted every dealer to check.

I just looked at the Gunbroker FFL list. Couple of real crooks. Some want to charge for the NICS call, and there's one that charges $35 for a "simple transfer", and $60 for a "complex transfer". Whatever that means. I'm assuming if you get delayed, he'll charge you extra?
