My DPMS LR308 MK12 weighs 11.4 lbs empty with optics (6-24 Sightron & ADM mount).

20 rounds of 308 in a PMag weighs 2 pounds. For a total of 13.4 pounds loaded.

That's pretty heavy. What does your AR in 308 weigh?

Please no AR15 weights.

I'm sure my weights aren't precise since I used a digital bathroom scale and just subtracted my weight from the given weight.

my DPMS 223 20" SS bull barrel weighs 9.5 LBs without scope and ammo..I'm assuming somewhere around 11 LBS...

DPMS LR-308B, 9.8lbs

Scope and rings, ~1lb

= 10.8lbs empty rifle

20rds in a Pmag, 2lbs (your #)

= 12.8lbs ready to go

All 308 semiautos I know of are heavy. There are some 308 ARs that are about 7.5-8lbs empty (Armalite's basic 16" AR-10 carbine is one) but a scope and ammo sends the weight up again.

Mags,

A point of clarification; 20 rds of 308 weighs about 1lb. a DPMS Steel mag weighs 8.8oz, and a Magpul P-mag weighs 5oz. Therefore, a 20 rd 308 mag weighs about 1.5lbs or less.

That aside, i have a highly modified LR 308. I had the 24" SS Bull barrel version cut down to 16" & reprofiled to .750" barrel diameter. I also replaced the hand guard with the Carbon fiber model and replaced the A2 stock with a VLTOR stock. The rifle weighs just under 8lbs.

I have a sightron 6.5-20 Big sky SII. it weighs about 18oz. I use an ARMS QD mount which weighs about 6.4oz according to a tech guy at ARMS.

All in, the rifle weighs 8+1.5+(18+6.4)/16 = 11lbs loaded with optics.

If you want to lighten the load of your Rifle, do the following;
1. Reprofile your barrel to a smaller diameter. (i recommend .750"). you may be able to save close to 1lb of weight.
2. Get rid of the rails...i know they are cool, but they are heavy. The carbon fiber handguard weighs less than 8oz. compare that to the one on there that weighs about 1.25lbs.
3. Get a lighter weight stock, The VLTOR, Magpul MOE/CTR are good choices. a lighter handguard and lighter stock will get you about .75lbs of weight loss.

Hope this helps.

I weighed a couple of rifles with accessories on a fairly accurate cooking/general purpose scale.

POF P308
20" barrel
MAGPUL PRS
Leupold Mark 4 3.5-10x40mm FFP M1 scope
Seekins medium 30mm rings

Weight = 12lb-13oz. (with empty 20 round PMAG)

Not an AR-308 but could be useful as a point of reference.

DSA SA58 PARA
16" barrel
GG&G QD mount
Leupold Mark 4 3.5-10x40mm M3 scope

Weight = 11lb-8oz (with empty 20 round steel magazine)

My 20" LR308 weighs about 11.5 lbs with iron sights; I have not weighed it since putting a scope on, although the scope is 20 oz according to its spec sheet, and the mount puts it just under 13 lbs.

Some DPMS models are about 8 lbs.

Well to help give a perspective on the weights posted, my .308 is a bench-only rifle Savage BAS/10K. Weights in at around 19+ pounds unloaded. Be glad your AR model .308 isn't nearly as heavy as mine.

Armalite AR-10 w/ 20" stainless barrel ~ 8lbs 14oz
Burris PEPR mount 30mm ~ 9oz
Falcon Menace 1.5-5x30 ~ 20oz
Magpul PRS stock ~ 27 oz (net 22oz over fixed stock)
Total weight ~ 12lbs 1oz without magazine or ammo

I agree with Send It... a lot of the weight in these rifles is in the barrel, and railed handguard, if you have one. For whatever reason, heavy barrels are very popular with AR manufacurers. Armalite seems to be the exception... they are the only one I know of that offers a 20" light profile chrome lined barrel in 7.62x51.

I had a DPMS LR-308C, but sold it because of the weight issue. It was over 11 lbs. unloaded with no optics. It was regular .750" profile after the gas block, but under the handguards the barrel was huge. Kind of like a HBAR profile. I really do not like this barrel profile for a rifle that is anything but a range gun. I wanted a battle rifle, so I sold mine and bought an M1A. My M1A weighs 8.4 lbs. unloaded. Just right!

I'm thinking of building another .308 AR on a MA-Ten receiver set, using an Armalite barrel, and with Troy's new TRX-extreme .308 handguard. It is extremely lightweight and modular, so you can put rails just where you need them instead of having those full length cheese graters all the time.

I have a RRA LAR-8, and I love it, but that damn thing weighs 100 pounds. Well it seems that way after a little carry time. I hog hunted in TX in Jan, and that thing was great. But I needed to rest the barrel a lot. Wore my arm out. so actual weight.....too damn much. still love it, can't help it.

Too much! With the PRS stock, 24" bbl, 2 ft suppressor, quad rail, bipod, 2 lb USO SN3 on top etc. I prob wouldn't carry it too far too fast

(but it sure shoots :) )
