Here are some pic's of my range pickups over the last 7 or 8 months. Who else enjoys picking up brass at the range?

Except for the 223 that is one day range scrounging for me. If it would just stop raining so I could get to the range it would be great. I shoot at an outdoor range so I doubt too many people have been out there lately and what was out there is probably really nasty after three to four weeks of rain. People just don't seem to care to pick up their brass at my range and I don't mind being the beneficiary. Rifle is a different story though. The rifle shooters tend to keep their brass...other than rimfire shooters. Thats fine with me because rimfires don't have to be de-primed before I recycle them so I actually appreciate that. I don't think I would buy a firearm based on the brass I have unless I had a good four or five thousand cases around and really wanted that caliber to begin with.
 
Rusty, you are like most of us reloaders, a little nuts.

Keep working. When you have about 5000 of each caliber you'll probably sleep better, although you will still twitch whenever you see an empty hit the ground from somebody's gun.

I do. But I have competition, and not too many people at my range leave their 'treasures' for someone else to grab.
 
I pick up all the little goodies too, but I'm a noob on reloading, so I don't know how "messy" or "old" the brass can be and still be reloaded.

My wife rolls her eyes when I remind her to keep the coffee cans.
 
Heck, I like the fact that my range is one of those "gun clubs" with an annual membership fee...but the high end gun shooters would never lower themselves to bending over to pick up their brass so I do...guess what pays for my annual membership fee. For 9mm I have enough to load, I have 4,000 cases sitting around collecting dust, another 3,000 in the recycle bin for various reasons. The rimfire is great for recycle to pay range fees and buy components. Once your brass can't be reloaded it goes in the recycle as well. If you do it this way...the brass you pick up can pay your range fee and components. It can also pay for wheel weights. If you melt down the wheel weights and sell some of the ingots on ebay that can pay for some of the molds and casting equipment so you can cast for free and can pay for components as well and still leave you with lead for casting your own. You can seriously shoot cheap or almost free sometimes, especially during the warmer months or the weeks heading up to hunting season when people are out there sighting in their hunting rifles. This is where you save money on reloading...:)
 
If I was at your gun range, the amount of brass you would have found would not have filled a coffee cup.

Unfortunately, at my range, the brass scavengers are faster, better, than I am. They are even getting .22LR brass. Times are tough.

Still, over the years, I have collected enough 9mm that when I finally got a 9mm, all I needed was the dies, and cheap bullets.

And that's what you should be doing. You never know what you are going to be shooting tomorrow. So save the brass today.

Benedict1. thanks for the compliment. My wife would argue that I'm more than a little nuts.:D This is from seven range trips. I have only had time to shoot IDPA once a month and no practice because I am having to work a lot of overtime. We pick it up after the match and about four or five of us share the brass.

If you don't do it all ready...wait until you decide to cast and start going all over town begging for used wheel weights and have buckets of those laying all over the house along with the buckets of brass...then you can get the redneck and dueling banjo jokes/comments from your wife like I do from mine...please note that she has no problem shooting the ammo in her gun though...hmmm...doesn't seem right now does it? LOL.
