How Often Do You Dissasemble Your Sks?

After each shooting session. You should also clean it after every 500-1,000 rounds if you are on an extended shooting session. My answer to every 'how often' question is always the same. By completely, I mean that you should remove the gas tube and piston, clean those, the bore, the bolt, carrier, and related assemblies. You don't necessarilly have to take the action out of the stock unless you get it wet or you're 'meticulous' about cleaning the gun. To review, if you shoot more than 500 rounds in a session, you might want to do a 'quick clean' of the bolt and bore before continuing to shoot. When you get it back, take off the receiver cover and gas tube and thoroughly clean what you can get at. A good after-session cleaning job takes me about 20 minutes not including the initial soak I give the barrel by running a saturated patch through and waiting about an hour.

When I first bought it, once or twice a day. Now I clean it fairly thoroughly everytime I shoot. I think I like taking it apart as much as shooting it.

Cleaned the cosmoline out when I first got it.
I've decided to run a case of ammo through it before even looking at cleaning it, though. Want to see the legendary "commie gun" reliability in action.

We'll see.

A couple of times a day when I first got mine, too. Now just every once in a while-like every 500 rounds maybe.

I do clean out the gas tube every time I shoot it, though, along with regular cleaning.

On the right side of the Rear Sight base, there is a little lever. Insert the tip of a dummy round (or other blunt instrument) in that hole on the end and rotate it about 90 degrees if memory serves. You can then lift the rear end of the handguard/gas tube assemblu up until it will clear the rear sight base and then forward. The gas piston will drop out the front of this assembly. Make SURE you put the piston back before you reassemble the gun or you'll have a single-shot gun. Clean the gas-tube with large patches and the piston you should be able to brush down with solvent and then wipe it all off. If you've never taken this assembly appart, you might want to do a thorough check to make sure there is no cosmoline trapped in there.

One other thing, don't rotate that lever too far. If you do, there is a spring loaded rod that will shoot out and put out an eye.
