im going to be in the market for a m1, i see lots on gunbroker that look nice, but how do you really know if its a good one? i my end up with 1500 bucks or there abouts for one, dont want to make it a 1500 dollar lesson in buying m1's

Buy a brand new one? In all seriousness, if I was gonna spend $1500 on an M1, I'd be inclined to just order up one from Fulton.

CMP Service Grade
+1 on the CMP suggestion.
I ordered a service grade M1 Springfield and got a bright and shiny bore rifle with a brand new Boyd's beech stock. I wanted a shooter and got one.
Service grade was $595 plus shipping.
I plan on ordering an H&R M1 and requesting one with original wood.
I got an email from CMP telling me they have some Winchester M1s for sell also!
+1 on the CMP suggestion.

CMP. Or pay twice as much and get half the rifle. The store's maybe 2-3 hrs from you and you could hand pick one.

Get a service grade and you'll get as close to a new M1 as you can come. Mine gauged just over 1 on the throat and the muzzle. I just hope and pray they have some left when I get my tax return.
I paid 595.00 for that rifle. You'd never even sniff one like that in a gunshop for twice the price.

I'll join the chorus: for as long as the CMP continues to have M1s, they will be the best source. For anybody lurking who missed the link, Swampy gave it in Post #4.

I'm glad I've kept coming back to this post. I've bumped around the idea of ordering a Garand from CMP for years now, but never done it. It pleases me greatly to see the kind of rifle you get under "Service Grade," and it's convinced me to definitely go that route when I do order.
Plus, my M1-desire has been rekindled. Just last night, I was trying to figure out how I might fit that into the budget...

When I first read the CMP rules, I thought it was going to be difficult to jump through all those hoops. But by sending an email to them I was able to begin seeing more clearly. And by the time I had everything in place and my paperwork ready to mail it didn't seem hard at all.
Oh, and being able to buy one for $595 and have it delivered to my door was worth it all by itself. CMP all the way for me.
Oh, did I mention that the OP ought to look into CMP?

Garandguy.com is a good place too. He is very honest in his descriptons of the rifles. That said, the prices are higher than CMP for about the same thing but it's an alternative anyway.

Yes the CMP is great.But,with some patience and practical sense you can find a deal online also.Look at the reputation of the seller,does he describe the rifle good?,does he provide clear and numerous photos?Does he provide a certificate of the CMP with it for a higher end one?Does he show a photo of the throat and bore measurement or at least the bullet test?If so and it is not priced gouged you can get a nice one on line for about the same as going through the CMP and you get to see it before you buy it.
In my experience, you are describing an extremely unlikely scenario.
Won't say it can't happen but it would be like hitting the lottery.
Another plus for the CMP is their customer service. If there is ANYTHING wrong with the rifle, they will send you a return label and make it right at no cost to you.

I didn't see anyone mention the CMP for M1's. I got my first service grade a year ago and it is nicer than the new production ones.

If you have $1500.00 to spend on a M-1 where is what I would do.
Buy a correct grade Springfield or HRA from the CMP and spend the rest on ammo!

wow! see, at first i thought i had to spend that much on a m1 to get a good one. now i se how wrong i was! seeing now that i can get a really nice one and a lot of ammo for 2/3's what i was going to spend on jsut a rifle, im going to go that route. thank you guys for the ideal about the CMP. even checked out there forums there too.
i may take a trip up there sometime this month adn see what they have in stock. heck, may walk out of there with 2

Jump through the hoops and go through CMP. They are a great company and have great rifles. Just got my SG m1 not too long ago. http://thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=385822 ofcourse the enfield in those pics is not a CMP purchase, however, the garand was. I am a very happy customer! just be ready to sign the paper work when fed ex delivers that rilfe to your door! fwiw the bandoleers are also from cmp.
