I got the stock off...but how do I remove the long metal tube that is screwed into the lower? Is it simply a matter of unscrewing it with elbow grease? Thanks...

Fixed A2 buttstock or telescoping stock (fake or real)?

If it's the A2, then there's an "oval-ish" tab on the end that you can use an adjustable wrench to loosen, or you can use a strap wrench. Watch for the recoil spring pressure when you're almost all the way off.

With the upper tilted away from the lower, you can remove the buffer from the tube at the receiver end by just depressing the buffer retaining pin that holds it in place. You can pull out the buffer and spring prior to disassembly of the stock to prevent any accidents.
