Back in 1967 as a 17 year old National Service draftee into the South African Defence Force, I was assigned to the Vickers platoon.
Vickers MMG ex WWII, with Maxim tripods ex WWI and canvas ammo belts loaded with green corroded .303 also ex-WWII.
The barrels on those guns were so worn out, the bullets would spray all over the place out at 2,000 m - as witnessed by tracers going crazy - but heck, that gun provided excellent suppressive fire.
We had LOADS of fun . . . except when we were sent running with the set-up - 3-man team. And running in the Namib Desert outside Walvis Bay, up and down the sand dunes.
#1 running with the Vickers gun - not fun when the shroud is steaming!
#2 running with the 40lb cast iron tripod - no fun at all
#3 running with ammo cans and steam catcher/water cans.
What does not kill you, makes you stronger
