In a part of Utah that resembles Tattooine.
In the summer of 1985, my dad spent several weeks tying a few hundred fishing flies to trade with the local Ace Hardware sporting goods manager for a pretty new Smith and Wesson Model 1500 in .270. It was his main deer and elk rifle until he recently died. I now have it, and my brother has one that is nearly identical, and I am wondering how close it is to a Howa 1500. I was told that it was made by Howa for S&W, and I see for example that Bell and Carlson stocks fit both rifles. Among things I would be considering might be a Timney trigger. Can I assume that anything that fits a Howa 1500 will also fit a S&W 1500?

I am pretty sure that is the same rifle. You should be good to go. You might want to call Timney to double check that it will fit. I have spoke with them before and they are very nice folks.

The Howa 1500 and the S&W 1500 are the same gun except for the markings. I have a Howa barreled action in an S&W stock. It's also been sold as the Mossberg 1500. The Weatherby Vanguard is the same gun with a few cosmetic styling touches.
