We've started thinking about retiring to Albuquerque in a couple of years. What kind of hunting opportunities are there nearby? What about ranges, including rifle and clay? Thanks.

Archery for deer, turkey, bear and cougar are 10 minutes - 1 hour from Albuquerque.

Rifle deer as close as 1 hour but farther is better. Deer and elk are draw only for all weapons on public land.

Doves are less than 1 hour, ducks, geese and cranes are less than 2 hours.

XD, you mentioned drawings for deer and elk on public land... is there private land, leases, etc., available for hunting? I understand a lot of land in NM is tribal land and hunting is not allowed. Thanks.

    Flynt,

There really aren't leases here like in Texas and hunting is available on all tribal land for a price but it's usually high.

Landowner permits are available. These are sometimes ranch specific but are usually unit wide. Prices are $400 to $5000 depending on the unit and quality of animal but are always available.

Hunting seasons for big game are short, mostly under 2 weeks.

We also have Antelope plus free range Oryx and Ibex. Antelope are available through the draw or landowner permit but Oryx and Ibex are draw only.

Things are changing here and we're working on changes that will benefit residents more but its very political.

I would be happy to help you out on hunting opportunities when you move here.
