So there are high capacity, thirty student school busses all over America, doing their thing. Never hurt anyone, always driven responsibly by licensed and trained drivers.
Then one day the driver of one bus loses his mind it due to whatever reason or the bus is stolen while the kids are in it. Take your pick. Either way, there were signs of mental disturbance in this individual but nobody bothered to take the appropriate steps to keep this person from getting access to the bus. The driver takes this bus and drives it off the side of a bridge and kills all of the students and the driver.
Yes, agreed, this is a tragedy!
What could have been or could be done to prevent this from happening again.
It is already illegal to drive a bus without a proper license. It is also illegal to steal a bus. It is illegal to kill kids, especially with a bus. So laws obviously don’t work.
“These” people say to put reinforced armored guardrails on every bridge in America just in case someone tries to do that again. Another suggestion is to have everyone drive a bus so we can block a madman in a bus from driving off a bridge. Then comes the size of the bus. To truly have a chance against a high capacity, thirty student bus, you also would need the same. A ten student bus just would not get the job done.
Then you have “those” people that say it was the bus (in perfect operating condition) that killed the students or the bridge allowed the bus to kill the students. At no point are they logically blaming the driver for their direct contribution to this tragedy but every other thing they want to get rid of. Busses are big and scary and make “those” people uncomfortable on the road. Busses corrupt kids. Just listen to the stories of what kids are doing in the back of busses. They say you should not need a bus with more than ten students if at all. In fact, we should just ban all busses all together, and you should drive your own kids to school. Just look at the long lines of parents at the school in the morning.
So, the moral of the story is that busses don’t kill people. People who weren’t hugged, disciplined, loved, spanked etc, kill people. So think about how YOU directly influence YOUR children to become productive and respectful citizens. If your kid has issues, fix them. Don’t let them drift into society so they can steal a bus just to get back at you for sucking as a parent. Society doesn’t need to fix your problems for you. YOU need to fix them. More legislation will not help any of this.
Let’s have a good new year and do OUR part to protect the kids. Don’t make the government have to do it for you.
