Hypothetical situation.

This is more of a hypothetical scenario and not a real world situation. Like somehow in the future, citizens are allowed to carry their weapon of choice and it would be considered normal and not frowned upon. You don't always have to carry a long gun or heavy weapon, but on certain days you can choose to based on your purposes (or just for fun).

I see nothing wrong with a law-abiding citizen carrying an M4 openly as long as it is done safely. I think it's more of the sheep who get scared by this sighting.

Thank you for your service btw.

In the spirit of the question, if it was socially acceptable to open carry, I'd carry a Hi-Power, P210, or G19.

I was more or less just ranting about the utter terribleness of carrying a long gun everywhere. I could also say the same for huge pistols.

I think I would openly carry. It is simply too bloody hot in the summer here on the Great Central Plateau of North America. I'd probably still carry what I usually carry (a Colt Commander [LW] in .45 ACP) but in a nicely build and finished cross draw holster. Probably with my logo on it (see avatar) and matching my clothing.

So if you saw a guy sporting an M4 and walking into a movie theater, you would not have a second of thought about it? How do you determine it is 'safely'?

Sling your M4 and take a stroll across the street from where the school buses are loading up the kindergarten kids.

So I guess, I'm a sheep because I would take a hard look at you and probably have a plan to shoot you or get out of there. I still see nothing that postulates a SD advantage of such actions and it's only posturing for the most part in the suggestions. Sorry, if that insults people's self-image.

A PS - to the 'it's too hot'. It's about 100 degrees in TX. I still manage to conceal a G19 and an extra mag and feel comfortable. The idea that you can't is more BS.

If I had one too it wouldn't bother me.

...but I would make sure I took my seat at the back seat row. :p

I actually probably wouldn't mind if I was carrying a pistol. The more M4s, handguns whatever I saw in a movie theatre, mall, supermarket et al the better.

How about 2 derringers in .357?
Anyone considering any derringer for self defense should take it to a good, realistic defensive pistol shooing course, try it in a couple of the drills, and see how it words out for them.

It could be my last choice.

I can't imagine trying to run a course with a derringer. But I will try to find someone with a maresleg I can shoot. I always thought if you practiced enough you could run anything. But I realized they seem to only hold six .357 rounds. Which makes it a larger harder to operate gun with a revolver capacity.

If it were normal for open carry for everyone, it would follow that firearms would become fashion or status symbols for some. Thusly I would follow with Tirod's reasoning.

And next month somebody would be dragging out their engraved and gold filled 1911 Grandpa willed them, and the race would be off.

I imagine pistols in the place of smart phones...
So, if based purely upon Personal Preference, with seemingly no wallet limit. I would be seen wearing daily a pair...
A mirrored set of engraved, then case hardened nineteen elevens, in thirty eight Super. Waterfall Maple grips, rounded main spring housing and Tungsten lanyard ring. Full length guide rod. I would holster them in a Black sharkskin cross-draw shoulder rig. Silver Conchos and tooling.

I would probably be wearing a Fedora too.

With ample opportunity to lean, dramatically, to show the Silver engraved magazine base plate.
Every 'Dame' would be constantly readjusting various garter belt held, jewel set, derringers. Or placing pearl and oyster nacre handled revolvers on an end table to rummage through their hand bags for Fire engine red lipstick.

The trouble is, I look terrible in a striped suit... OH well... just a day dream.

Well, the precedence is already there with pink (etc) frames for pistols. Might even make a comeback for fancy custom leather; belts, holsters et al.

And why not? I'd be all for the pistol replacing the iPhone.

Probably a big revolver (My 6.5" Blackhawk, maybe). I like revolvers, and the Blackhawk is a real beauty. I would not carry any long gun, though. Long guns are a pain in the butt to carry around, and I'd imagine it would only be worse in a public setting. I can just see myself with my 870 across my back, stock bumping into everyone I walk by, awkwardly apologizing for accidental stock bumps and muzzle sweeps.

I am afraid that few people here have fantasies about some sort of the breakdown of society or something similar where they can be "in charge", or at least intimidating.
M-4's in a movie theater?
And "the more - the better" ?
Israelis live like that b/c they don't have a choice, not b/c they want .
That is not a normal life, and I am sure they want peace to prevail one day so ( among many other reason)they can stop carrying their long guns on beaches, public transportation, inside cafes.
No wonder anti 2A crowd is accusing us of '' wanting a Wild West again"
