I went to a pawn shop today to check out a Fender P-bass they had on their website. I brought along my Ruger 10\22 carbine on the outside chance they would want to trade. The bass needs some work but the Ruger hasn't been fired in years.
After going back out and grabbing the rifle, I was stopped and told they don't take that kind of weapon. Puzzled, I asked what the problem was with my little 22 plinker.
I was informed that the removable magazine makes it an assault rifle.

I guess the factory 10rd magazine and cheap 4x Tasco scope means this is a serious assault rifle. Really odd considering I bought it during the AWB.

Anyone want to buy my scary black assault sniper rifle? A bargain at only $1,200 or trade for a 90s vintage Japanese P-bass in need of some TLC.

That sounds bizarre. Did it have a wooden stock?

I'll trade a P-Bass copy for your 10/22. I really want an assault rifle just like you really want a Fender so I guess we can both just settle.

I guess I should buy it since I've been looking for a 10-22 receiver.

State laws are all different, but I hope this guy was just messed up and it's not actually classified as an "assault weapon" (don't laugh, I believe it is in some places).

Something to be noted; the media once called semi auto rifles 'assault rifles' and when the people pointed out that it lacked the select fire that defines an assault rifle, they switched to the vague/made up term assault weapon.

As a side note doesn't the new NY law require that simple .22 rifle to be registered since it can hold more than 5 rounds? (Not the SAFE act but the new registration I've heard about).

Is It an "ASSAULT" Rifle ?

I'm really tired of hearing every gun banning wanna be, call every semi-auto rifle an "ASSAULT RIFLE". Where's the select fire switch to make it fully automatic ? Are any of you guys getting "sick & tired" of this too ?:fire:

bs, an assault rifle is a selective fire rifle with a high capacity magazine and an intermediate caliber. Maybe he confused it with the legal term "assault weapon".

Whoa, this caught more attention than I thought.
Yes the $1200 is sarcasm. I didn't pay more than 180 for it new back in 2000 when I turned 18. I just wanted a new project guitar. Since AKs have jumped so much in price, why not my super light awesome assault rifle? LOL.
I live in NV. There is no such thing as an assault rifle here at least according to law. I think this is an uninformed employee following a misguided policy.
The ruger is just a blued carbine with a black plastic factory stock. Nothing fancy at all.

How many people did you kill with it on your way to the shop?

Funny you should mention a p-bass copy StrutStopper. The one I was looking at was actually a Japanese p-bass and wasn't actually made by Fender. It was ghost built by Fuji-gen.

May be a misguided policy but it is a sign of the times. All semi-auto detachable mag is on the chopping block. Doesn't matter what it is beyond that, those two features have to go.

I think it's a sign of some times gone by when assault rifles were still a 'thing'
The funny thing is that with the jump in gun prices over the past few years, especially ak and ar pattern rifles, you would think pawn shops would be all over them. Buy cheap and make a killing. Since when are pawn shops allergic to money?

The pawn shops here in Las Vegas are probably overstocked with guns that won't sell due to the fact they price everything at full retail price no matter what condition it is in.

So long as there is a fight to preserve the RKBA, this joke will never get old.

Wait...... A shop in NV called that an assault weapon. NV??!?!??!

I hope for your sake they are equally as ignorant about the Fender P-bass too.

Obviously the guy was a Californian transplant (yeah, I'm making an assumption, but probably a good one) who assumes (lot of that going around, lately) the whole country works like the place he was from. Stupid to be a pawn operator and not know jack about gun laws, though. Makes me wonder if he knows to make customers fill out a form 4473

They. Don't. Know. The. Difference, and They Don't. Care. To.

You need to read the internal comms from the MAIG leaders in the Legal section; you'll see that the goofy façade of ignorance/hate they present to the world really and truly is what they think and who they are. Startlingly guileless/amateurish in their tactics and understanding, considering how much conspiracy we attribute to their ranks. The internal emails show them favoring the new acronym "SAW" for these guns (Semi-Automatic Assault Weapons, or eventually Semi-Automatic Weapons) which "just happens" to be the same acronym for this:
    640px-Improved_M249_Machine_Gun.jpg
That's right; your 10/22 with a ten round mag is soon to be synonymous with a freaking belt-fed light machinegun :banghead:. I need to build a semi-auto beltie just so they'll be accurate when it comes to me.
