I was in a pawnshop the other day when someone came in and tried to sell a gun, He was talking to an employee there about how stupid it was for him to have a shotgun that only held three rounds. Yes I think we all know why it only held 3 rounds. The gun was a mossberg 500 12 GA with a gold trigger the pawn shop offered him 150 in store credit or 125 cash he was about to walk away I offered 175 cash and he took it. I know I'm evil for not telling him to take out the plug but I scored a neat gun on the cheap.

I've bought more than one car that would barely stay running for next to nothing, then popped the vacuum tube back on it....same sort of thing.

I would love to see that guys' face when he buys his next shotgun...."What? This one only holds three also...?!?!?" :)

I used the title as a joke. I dont feel any guilt in getting a cool gun because of someone else's ignorance. Im happy with it and the turkeys and deer will fill up my freezer with this baby.

No input on the ethical issue. That's up to you.

I'm just wondering how good a relationship you have with the pawn shop. If I were the owner and someone I didn't know listened to what I offered someone and then offered more, there would be a very colorful confrontation.

Just wondering if you know him well, because I suppose that may make a difference.

Even at the gun shop I worked at, I bought guns that way. Shop would give their max offer, I'd offer a little more. We'd have to do the transaction outside of the store, but they were OK with it.

Maybe my second trip there, I did do the transaction out of their store out of respect for the establishment. I just chalked it up to fate, I was looking for a cheap receiver on which to do a project build and this was at least to me, right place right time type of deal.

Stupidity and Ignorance (the state or fact of being ignorant; lack of knowledge, learning, information, etc. ) are two entirely different things.

I won't argue the ethics of this particular situation,,,
I'll just say I would have handled it,,,
Differently.

I don't think whether it's stupidity or ignorance makes a darn bit of difference.

Its a matter of treating others as you, your wife or child, would like to be treated.

What goes around, comes around. I would have use the opportunity to make friend than start bad karma.

IMO, I don't think its a great deal, but, hey, nice gun.

No sympathy for some one who cant read an instruction manual, ask or search a simple question.

That said, if I was working the counter I would have taken out the rod and sold him a bunch of slugs and 00.

In this case, is the store owner also unethical for not telling his customer about the rod too? If you weigh the lesser of two evils, the lesser evil gave him an extra $25.

Talking ethics, I get sneered at but....
I would have told him about the Mossy 500 mag limit plug and how to remove it and asked him if he still wanted to sell it.

Not form me, I've done things like that. I figure it's better to educate and make a friend that not. Someone somewhere may well tell this person about the plug. What is his opinion of the OP, and by association all gun owners then?

Exactly what I would have done. My Dad was a very successful salesman for many years. His "secret to success"... treat every customer exactly the same way you would want to be treated if you were the customer.

I run a pawn shop in NC. If you pulled that crap here, I would have called the local sheriff's office and pressed charges. In NC it is unlawful to do what you did, even in my parking lot. By the way I have, as the store manager, cheerfully removed the plug on more than one shotgun for customers like that, not charged them a dime, and asked that they simply come see me next time they need something. I am in a small town, and because of my ethics, I have the local banks, officers, firefighters, EMTs, etc all recommending people come to my shop vs the other 2 guys in town. That to me is worth far more than a mossberg shotgun.

It's unlawful to buy private property in NC?

No its unlawful to buy or sell items on any retail establishment's property, unless you are buying or selling with them. Buy and sell all you like on public property or your property but not on my store's. It's immoral to enter a business establishment and take business from them. You want to buy his gun, you wait until he refuses my offer and you see him down the rd. You do it in my store or parking lot, I will have charges against you, you but in and make an offer while I am negotiating, you will be banned from the property before you can complete said offer.
