I can't find the right nightstand gun!

The best night stand gun is the best range gun you have with most of us I would guess the weapon we shoot the most is the one we get the most use of at the range of course not counting the .22. We don't have to worry about how big it is since we don't conceal carry it. For me it's my beretta 92. I'm also with forumsurfer I don't like lights mounted on my weapon for the reason he stated also when I was a young cop I was told by the older ones to keep your light in your weak hand and hold it out to the side of you in case a bad guy want to take a shot there a good chance he will focus on the light and his rounds will land close to it.

Been watching this one for a while...

Excellent suggestions out there already, so I will state the obvious.

You're looking for a One Night Stand Gun?

Sorry, had to do it.

I like a pistol / auto loader for my nightstand gun, revolvers are tooo darn loud for in the house.

Take a .357 Sig autoloader and compare it to the noise of a 44 Special revolver. Guess which is louder.

Then again, it is all relative. All will cause some degree of hearing damage, so just go with what works best for you. And this is the advice I offer to the OP: don't limit yourself on the capacity front, or even on caliber. More rounds are a nice bonus, but as you've found out with your Glock, more rounds shouldn't be substituted for shootability in YOUR hands.

Good luck!

I have an EAA EZ 40 with a weapon light for my home defense pistol. It holds 11 rounds of 40s&w and is very accurate and soft shooting. It is made by the Serbian company Zastava, which has been making quality weapons for 100 years. It is a great choice and can be found for around $400!! Good luck!

This 3rd Gen Smith 5906 w/CT Lasergrips works for me.

In the nightstand on my brides side of the matrimonial bed resides a 357mag Ruger Security Six.

Have you considered ... The Judge?

Okay, I know you said you had some issues with revolvers but you shot my first instinct down with the 1911. Personally, I keep my Kimber Stainless II - Government w/ 230 grain JHPs holstered on the side of my bed. Why? Because I am the most accurate and comfortable with my Kimber ... all though my Judge would also be a great choice for a quick response!

amp4s2.jpg 2bwqv7.gif 2v1x7gz.jpg

My particular Judge is the magnum version so I have the ability to chamber 3" shells but I'm sure the 2 1/2" would get the job done! ;)

PICTURE 1 - My Taurus Judge - Three 410 ShotShells On Bottom and Two 45 Cold Rounds On Top.

PICTURE 2 - At Bottom You Have Three 3" 410 Double Ought Buck ShotShells And On The Top You Have Two Hornady 45 Colt 225 Grain Rounds With Hornady's Patented FTX (Flex Tip eXpand).

PICTURE 3 - My Judge Is Loaded So That The 3 410 ShotShells Will Fire First Followed Up By The Two 45 Colt Rounds.

The 3 shotshells, when used close-up like in a car or the tight space of a home would certainly stop somebody and if after 3 410 shells they still want some more then the 45 Colt will put them down.

Don't forget, in most home invasions you're not dealing with a trained soldier or a heavily armored and armed terrorist ... no, you're dealing with some D-bag who wants to steal your stuff, sell it, then go buy some weed.

Hope my post helps!!! Take Care & Be Safe!!!

Nice Judge NJ

I've always wanted to fire one of those with the 410 shells just to see what it felt like and what kind of patterns I get at 5, 10 and 15 yards.

I'm taking a small group trap shooting this weekend on some family farm land, guess the judge wouldn't be too great for that? :D /end sarcasm

I keep a Kimber at my bedside, too. First two rounds are frangible and the rest are powr ball. Chances are that plain old ball ammo would get the job done all around, but what the hey...you never know.

My nightstand pistol just happens to be an HK USP in either 9mm, or .40. I also frequently carry one, or the other.

I'm with many of the posters here who feel very safe with a 1911 by the bed. However, I thought I would throw out that I recently picked up a used Beretta 96 (.40) on a whim and have been very happy with it. There are 15 rnd mags available, and it came with night sights and after market finger grove/rubber grips. I think I paid around $350, so the price was right for the gun and package.
For reference, over the past 15 years or so I have had 3 Glocks, (19, 22 & 27), 2 Rugers, (P-89 & P-94), an HK USP .45 and a .357 revolver as bed side guns and I have extensively fired other Sig, Glock, Springfield and polymer frame Berettas. By comparison, I was pleasantly surprised by how well the Beretta 96 fit in my hand and how natural sight alignment and pistol stabilization is through a full trigger pull, (for me anyway). I think this may be one of the best combinations of round capacity, grip size and ammunition strength that you will find, and if the ergonomics of this older model of Beretta are a good match for your hands then you should be able to find some great deals.

I have my Bersa Thunder .380 Deluxe with HP+P's on one side, the S&W .38 special with Fed.fmj H.S./HP's, on the other and a Mossberg Cruiser with 7 "managed recoil" .00's against the wall. And a bunch of nosy neighbors (+1 LEO). All I need is a big dog. All those dangerous Amish gangs around here aren't gonna get to me!!

Recently I have fallen back in love with the .357.. It's my new night stand gun. And my car gun. And my motorcycle gun. Too loud for the house? Sure..

At the moment--Ruger KP95 and 3 spare mags close by--if 61 rounds won't do it--I'm not sure what will.

New M&P .45 might fill that role when I get my 2 more mags from S&W.

My Taurus Judge - Three 410 ShotShells On Bottom and Two 45 Cold Rounds On Top.

For a while, I had a similar setup with my 686+ : 1 shotshell, 3 .38 spl hollowpoints, 3 .357 mag. The idea was that the first round would disorient a BG without killing him and might get him running off. Like a load of rocksalt. Then it's escalating force past that. Since then I've changed my mind and now its 3 .38s and then the .357s, in Corbon DPX. One of the strong points for a .357 as a bedside gun is the variety of ammo setups you have available.

The Glock 22's grip sucks!
Kimber Commander 1911 mag capacity sucks!

Well you could get a G22 and have a grip reduction done. Oh there are also lots of other handguns besides Glock and 1911. S&W, Steyr, Sig, FN, etc

I'd posit that an 8 round 1911 is more than enough for HD.

The Glock 22's grip sucks!
No.
You just need to practice shooting it more.
The human hand is a wonderful thing....it can adapt to virtually any handgun.
With practice, anyone can learn to shoot a Glock very fast and accurately.
If you go to a shooting school like Thunder Ranch you will see that the Glock works just fine.

Kimber Commander 1911 mag capacity sucks!
Which is why your Glock 22 is the better option.

Mouse guns suck in general!
I agree.
The smallest I would ever go is a snub-nose in .38 Special.

Revolvers have the same problem as the 1911 does.
Right!
So again, this is why your Glock 22 is your better option.

Shotguns aren't really an option and I already have one in the closet.
SHOTGUNS ROCK!!!
But they can be a bit awkward and unwieldy for home defense....which is why the Glock 22 may be the better option inside your home.

The gun is to be used in the car and the nighstand plus as a holster gun for target shooting and hunting, and I have gone through all of my guns, I can't find one of them that is perfect for this.
This where the Glock 22 might not be the best option for you.
Instead, I recommend the Glock 27 subcompact, or the Glock 23 compact.

I also debate the .40 vs the .45 and have been doing some research on different brands but I don't know.
Both calibers are good.
But if you want more magazine capacity, then the .40 is going to be your best bet.

What's your setup and what would you like for these tasks?
I had a Glock 22 and, in my opinion, it is nearly perfect as a home-defense/truck/range gun.
It's only real shortcoming is in concealed carry.
Which is why I traded it for a Glock 27 once I got my CCW permit.

Now the G27 serves are my home-defense/truck/concealed carry pistol.
For a small gun it is surprisingly accurate (nearly as accurate in my hands as my G22 was), and 10 rounds of .40 is not bad for capacity.
Besides, if I want more capacity for home-defense I can always use my G22 15-round mags in my G27.

It is not a great range gun but I'm a firm believer than one must practice with what they carry.

Good luck,
Easy

TO: ForumSurfer & ShockWave

ForumSurfer: The Judge is a very fun gun to shoot and in NJ it must be somewhat rare because I've been a member at two different ranges and every time I bring that gun and start shooting I hear people in the background asking what the hell is he firing.

Even if you're not a Class 1 Sniper The Judge at close range is devastating! What really bothers me is when I see people beating up on The Judge for not being accurate. The Judge IS accurate at CLOSE RANGE because that is how it was designed! The Judge is a car gun or home defense gun ... NOT a range/target gun ... these people are loading the 410 shells and shooting at a target 50yds away and then getting all bent when they miss!

Standing in your hallway or bedroom firing at somebody 5 or 10 feet away there is little chance of missing ... unless you're not pointing the gun at them that is.

ShockWave: Your statement is exactly what I was thinking too! I'd really rather not have to kill somebody so if I can scare him off or wound him to make his think twice and run I'd prefer to do that. But make no mistake, if it came down to him or me ... or him and one of my loved ones you can be damn sure it's going to be him!

Listen ... I'd rather not kill somebody but if you were to force my hand then I'd have no compunction or second thought about putting you down!

I hope that neither I or anyone else here is ever put into a situation where they are forced to pull their weapon but if you are I pray your shots are dead on and you have no doubts or guilt about what you're doing! Take Care and Be Safe!!!

If 9 rounds of .45 in your 1911 won't solve the problem, maybe you should go with a shotgun afterall

I sport a glock19 with a 33 round mag full of Hornady Critical Defense and a flash light lately. Sometimes a 1911, sometimes a ruger gp100. Occasionally a 12 gauge. I kind of mix it up, one way or another I sleep great at night.

Here is something that I did not see mentioned. If you fire a 357 magnum in the house, you will be temporarily blinded and everyone in the house will be deaf. Unless you have a low flash load and some powders do not make the earthshaking BOOOM! that is typical to the 357 and 44 magnums.
