I go to Yahoo Answers hunting section and answer questions there a lot. Here is one that stumped me

In which hunting rifle this bullet will fit (with pics)?
My uncle told me that this is a 6mm bullet and it fits on 6mm hunting rifle. I've searched on the internet for it's specifications and its price but I didn't find anything. Here in lebanon (middle east) the rifle is called 6mm hunting rifle. So what is it called in the U.S? And if there is any site make me know,

Here are the pictures of the bullet:

you can see it from a few other angles too here.

It looks to be a #209 shotgun shell primer with some sort of capsule containing powder and shot attached.

I have no idea what it would be fired in, except to speculate that it might be intended for a modified airsoft gun.

Wow, that would stump me too. I concur with the #209 shotshell. Looks very much homespun (especially the "crimp").

Are they using only these shotshells in the "hunting rifles" and not some other solid-projectile load (that the word rifle would indicate)? I'm interested to hear more.

Edit: that sure looks suspiciously like a clear straw slipped over a #209 primer. I gather this is a cut n' paste from Yahoo Answers. Is it possible someone is just playing around with some stuff the have laying about, maybe just to "stump the experts" with a made-up cartridge?

Id say yes and added to that the poster may have also made a homebrewed gun to fire it as well.

I am suspicious it is a case of a common 'home brew' solution. It is quite possible that ammo can't be brought in but primers raise no eyebrows, and then the local machineshop or whatever is able to fabricate a simple break open rifle that fires such shells.

It may not be an issue of getting it past the government, it may be a cost issue. It is possible that this is a very economical way to hunt small game, the local equivalent of a 22LR birdshot round. Primer + straw to form a hull, powder from somewhere (maybe scavaged from military ammo, something the average people may not be allowed to have or maybe it is a case of 1 7.62x39 round has enough powder to make 10 of these) and then fabricating lead shot has got to be darn easy.

Problem I see would be that the plastic goes all the way to the base of the primer. The detonation happens in the middle of the plastic. That means that the straw would probably separate, or blow out the end. Either way you may leave a portion of the plastic stuck to the chamber when you try to extract after firing. Since it is soft, has a low melting point and is between two pieces of metal when the firing occurs I see lots of issues.

Kinda of leaning toward homemade invention that OP is looking for someone to say he has a good, or viable idea. But will not get that from me.

I can't tell from the picture if it's a center-fire or rim-fire.

If rim-fire, it may be a modern version of the 6mm Flobert garden gun shotshell.

Here are the other two pics that were linked to.

Gives it some scale, and it definitely looks like a #209.

to be honest, if you look closely at the mystery material between wad and primer, it looks like fresh steps cat litter with odor control modules. or Dcon rat poison in the chewable packets. otherwise they are using homebrew explosives possible fertilizer bomb chemistry.

to be honest going by the size of the 209 primer this should fit be skinny enough to fit into a 22 mag chamber. however the length probably wouldnt be doable on that.

there were many 6 and 9 mm diameter cartridges in created before 1910 that this could be used in. so many that unless you had a master list of chamber dimensions of all experimental and actual weapons and measurements for the thing in the picture theres no telling other then "home made zip gun".

also as noted above, the way its built the whole plastic tube containing the pellets would pop off the 209 primer and go down the barrel while leaving lots of plastic sludge in it. would act like a cc1 shotshell out of a rifle barrel and jsut make a big donut. otherwise it would be a slightly improved form of "cutshell" or magsafe round.

When I was much younger there was a skeet game out called "mo-skeet-o" (sp?) that used a sub caliber shot shell. Never saw a shell for this game, but could this possibly be one? :)

Maybe a homemade equivalent to a Flobert shell, but I doubt the cartridge in the photo was mass produced (commercially anyway).

At first glance it looked like a .410 shotgun shell with a transparent case. It's a shot cartridge of some sort.

I found a 6mm shotshell listed in Cartridges of the World. They don't know nothing, either. Says it can be only useful as a pest cartridge. Says it's normally a paper case.

Bamboo gun

We used to make bamboo guns at home. Just strip out some bamboo, cut it open, then make a silly looking almost shell with a primer, some kind of padding, and a lot of shot to amke a nice big hole in the mud. With no powder, the shell would only fire a little.

Whoever made this should reconsider shooting it.

Wax is much more fun, and a lot safer.
