I Like L Frames

The L-frame and X-frame are the only two modern S&W revolver frames I don't own. If they made the L-frame in any other cartridge but 357 Magnum I would probably own one.

An L-frame, with fixed sights (like a 681), 4-inch full under-lugged barrel, chambered in 10mm Auto is sort of a dream revolver of mine. But one I am not likely to ever realize.

The Mdl 69 is a 5-shot L-frame .44 Magnum.

I used a 6”, no dash and a 4”, -1 in competition. When I retired from competition I sold them. Just not that enamored with the 357 S&W Magnum cartridge.

Give Gary Reeder a call.

A S&W Model 696 in 44 Special is another L-frame in a cartridge other than 38 caliber. Unfortunately, they are somewhat rare and therefore pricey.

The S&W Model 986 is a 7 shot 9x19 L-frame, but that is about the same as 38 caliber.

A 10mm L-frame would be interesting.

I have a Model 29 for the 44 Mag. I really like the idea of a 10mm L-frame giving 6-shots, with 357 Mag power levels, while using shorter fatter cartridge on thicker more robust moonclips. The fixed sights would be icing on that cake.

Give Gary Reeder a call.

Thanks for the suggestion. Not sure I have the money or patience to pay/wait for a Reeder custom.

Really worth it if you can find the patience.

Funny you say that because I think .357 in anything less than 5" is pretty much pointless, unless it's loaded with some really fast burning powders. I'm glad we don't all like the same thing, or we'd be fighting over them constantly, and be in continuous agreement making the world a very boring place.

I only have one, a 686+ 7-shot 4”. It’s one S&W that I really enjoy shooting, whether I’m shooting .38 WC over bullseye or 180 JSP over H-110.

That was a very nice acquisition to fill out your L-frame stable .

Stay safe.

I like "L" frames too.

L Frame fan here, too. I have a 1982 model (no dash) 686 with 6" barrel and 1983 model (no dash) 586. The 686 has an incredible action, both single and double. The 586 action is very nice, but the 686 is amazing with a 6.5# D/A pull that is so smooth that it feels like a lighter weight pull, and a 2.3# S/A pull that breaks perfectly. Even with the light pulls it still lights off all primers that I've ever tried.

The S&W L frame is a great frame size .. ability to be a 7 shot 357mag , a stout 5 shot 44 mag ..
Snubbies and 4 inch barrels for SD carry and longer tubes for range and woods carry ...

Wow that's an awesome Model 686 collection! When they first came out I knew I had to have one. Always thought the K frame was a little too "small" to handle a steady diet of .357 loads while the N frame seemed a little too "big" for the cartridge. That made the L frame sort of like the "Goldilocks" gun to me: just the right size!

Shot this at 25 feet, offhand. First shot was single action, the rest double using a 158gr Hi-Tek coated bullet over 15.1gr of H110
