I need a 6" revolver for my wife

Edit: removed first paragraph because it was muddying up the issue. I only need advice on mid sized 6" 38/357 revolvers. Please keep this on topic.

I found a Taurus 66 at a local pawn shop for $299. It is a 6 shot , 6", blued, half lug, adj sights, it seemed to be tight, the trigger was smooth and functional. The finish looked nice with some holster wear on the end of the barrel. Maybe 95%+. I am not good at percentage guesses. The serial number started with a 55.....

Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

First rule of women and guns is have her pick her own!

That being said, if she has small hands she may find it difficult to reach the trigger on a K frame sized revolver. Check before buying.

I suggest you look at a .32 S&W for a fairly low powered centerfire, the .32 Regulation Police was made on the small I frame and later on the slightly larger J frame with a four inch barrel. This will give a similar feel to the 642.

S&W also make a J frame in .327 Federal which will also chamber .32 S&W Long, but these are a new and premium priced gun.

If she can handle the larger K frame then the Taurus should be OK if it passes the revolver check out thread. Otherwise look for a used S&W Model 14. In a four inch barrel the Model 15 has nice balance and adjustable sights.

Should have started her with a rented .22, not an airweight .38. Try taking her to a range with a large selection of rental guns. Start her out with a .22, either revolver or semiauto, see which one she is more comfortable with. If she's strong enough to work the slide, etc., she might be better off with the latter rather than a revolver. If you're set on a revolver looked at used ones, S&W K & J frames: Models 10, 12, 37, 64, 65. Six-inch barrel is too long for carry for most people, look for 4" barrels or shorter. Only use 148-grain target wadcutters until she is used to the recoil, then try going to +P loads. If she can't handle the recoil, try her on 125-grain Federal Nyclad cartridges, they don't have much recoil and are good for self-defense.
