I shot a FLY today!

I've been a lurker around here for a few months but I thought this was worth posting so I registered. A very unlucky fly landed on one of my targets as I was shooting today at the range. Sensing an opportunity that does not come often, I put the crosshairs of the Nightforce 12-42 on the little bugger and eased into the trigger on the Tubb 2000 in 260 rem. and let a 95grain Vmax do the hard work. Getting back on target after the recoil it was more than obvious at 42x that the fly was a messy one shot kill. A very distinct splatter ejection from 3 to 6 o'clock on the paper. I guess I `missed' a `little' high and left which explains the splatter. The guy next to me thought I was nuts or a liar when I told him I just killed a fly. At the next target change he was a believer. :what: I will try and post some pics in the next few days.

If an insect lands on a benchrest target, and wanders into the sighter portion, well, they don't live long. Shots have been known to "fly" off the paper too - You think you have a flier, so you shoot to fill it in, and it turns out that you really had a small group, with a bug next to it...

After large matches, such as the Supershoot or Nationals, you'll find bug pieces all over the range. Sometimes birds - not on purpose, but they'll fly into the path of fire...

Tends to mess up groups.
 
I shot a bird out of the sky with an M-60 once.

Not that I could have done it on purpose. Little bugger flew in front of the target just in time for the burst.

Great gun, great bullet, a sweet scope, and a really nice shot.:)
I love my Nightforce. Anyone need a spotting scope?;)
 
You shot a fly on a target, so what? Start consistently nailing them out of the air and then you'll really have something to post about.;)
 
I did used to shoot bees out of the air with the BB gun.
When they began to hover that is.
And yes, I know bees don't hover, it's some sort of fly variant.

But it was still a bee. >=|
 
Once while playing with my new Browning Auto 5 and a couple cases of heavy dove loads I was able to massacre a massive dragonfly invasion.

Please don't tell PETA.
 
I found out that if you take an empty mountain dew bottle and set it up with the cap off bees will hover over the top of it. I hate bees :D
 
My younger brother bought an airsoft pistol. you know the ones that shoot those little plastic BB's that every little kid seems to have these days. Well he told me that it was really accurate and that it would shoot about 300 fps. so i saw a fly on the windo of the house took aim and dropped it. I also however, cracked the front window of my parents house. my bad mom. :D
 
Nice airsoft then...what's it modeled after?
I hear the Bren Ten one is supposed to be pretty strong.

I hate bees too...I used to go out the backdoor and hunt them. Every few minutes 4 or 5 of them would mass up, and start flying by my head, some times hitting me...I had to retreat for a few minutes...then repeat. >_>
 
Jed and Jethro Clampett used to put honey on the perimeter fence, and shoot flies attracted to it. However, using their Kentucky rifles on a sitting fly was considered unsportsman like. They only shot them in flight.:D

I remember that episode... Drysdale kept taking them to the Skeet range and winning bets! The funniest was elly who used a slingshot and STILL won him $$ :)
 
I get little bugs running through my room with my airsoft gun. It's great. It's also fun to shoot at something, then try to shoot the BB that was just fired.

I just saw that episode recently... I kept thinking to myself that a modern sitcom would NEVER focus on the good marksmanship of the main characters...
 
I saw a fly shoot a perfect bulls-eye once. My brother was sighting in a rifle and was just hunkering down for the first shot when a fly blipped him right in the eye. He jumped in surprise, which caused him to unintentionally pull the trigger. The target had a perfectly centered bulls-eye hit.

My boss's younger son once shot the screen of his older brother's notebook computer with an airsoft gun. :cuss:

Can you say $1200 repair, boys and girls?
 
I shot a cricket once with my airsoft pistol. Little guy somehow found his way into my bedroom and scurried under my guitar amp. Well I didn't want that little bugger chirping while I was trying to sleep so I decided to take him out. Loaded up the airsoft gun and pasted him to the wall. Moved my guitar amp a while back and sure enough, a couple of his legs were still stuck to the wall. :D

I thought they just shot the wings off, remember they would light matches also
