I grew up shooting Colt gov and GCs my dad had.
He built a target rig w Bomar rib and that thing was a shooter (verified w Ransom Rest).
Turned into a Sig guy and dumped his Colt 1911s.

Must say, the Sig Target in stainless, no rail, in .45 acp was a dandy.
Of course those no longer made.
And I got rid of my Commander a while back.

Don't have any 1911 now.
And not really a target shooter (pops shot weekly for decades).

so I've been thinking..........make replace my Colt, with a Colt, a Delta Elite for deer hunting.
Alas, I like an adj rear sight.

5" 10mm w adj rear sight. Don't want a long slide.
Think CZ makes some (heck they make the Colts now).

That Sig target model in 10mm woulda been perfect.

I am a DIE HARD 1911 fanboy. First got to shoot one when I was not even going to school yet. Fell in love. Favorite toy guns were always look like 1911's. Even I admit the design has been left in the dust long ago by FAR better. Yet I still carry one, and if my house was on fire at least one 1911 would make it out with me. If they ever invent something like a Phaser we can buy I am sure I will still be carrying one of my 1911's
Now the 10mm round? That I do like. Have one PCC in that caliber that will run both .45ACP and 10mm with just a simple barrel and bolt swap. Sadly was made by a Co owned by a less than stellar guy I did not know about when I bought it. I have come REAL close to buying another 1911 in 10mm though.

You don't have to spend big money to purchase a reliable, well built, 1911.

While I shoot 200 LSWC's in 2700 Bullseye (and probably going to 185 LSWC's), once I had the sights adjusted for my target loads, I have no need for adjustment. In fact for my fun shooting, I see no need for adjustable rear sights because I shoot 230 RN bullets

I came to the conclusion that the 230 RN bullet was the most reliable in feed, shot accurately beyond my ability, and I did not need heavier bullets in the 1911 pistol. I also like the fact that fixed iron sights don't lose pins, screws don't come loose, which I have had with adjustable rear sights. I have had a number of S&W rear revolver sights come loose at the range due to the thousands of rounds I put through them. Screws on the top strap came loose, pretty sure I had a pin in a Bomar work loose. Factory 45 ACP 1911's are adjusted for ball ammunition, that is a 230 RN at 800 + fps and that's what I reload.

You can spend more for something like a Springfield Armory. This pistol was tight all over, no movement, and the trigger is great. Had to get it that day.

this about all I can do with irons at 50 yards. (I wanted to see if it shot to point of aim with my short range plated bullets)

or you can pay about half, and still have a reliable accurate 1911:

this load kicked more, so I flinched more

I carried a Colt Commander for quite a few years.
Not interested in .45 acp these days (unless a Sig Target like my dad had comes along at sane price....yeah right!).
So for me it's pretty much 10mm only.

50 yards and under deer killin.

Silly maybe, since I got rid of my Colt .45 acp, kinda wanted to replace w a Colt 10mm.
The cheapest I'd go is a Springfield Ronin.

There are designs now with less weight, more capacity, fewer parts, etc as compared to a 1911.

While I have some makes that fit that description, I also have 1911’s and they are among my favorites to shoot and handle.

I still think a well made, proven 1911 is a good thing to have around. Good to hear that you’re considering getting back into one.

Can you swing a Nighthawk? I love my Shadowhawk 5” 10mm. It launches 200 grainers at 1200-1250 fps with precision; plenty for deer out to 50 yards and the accuracy is there. I checked out a Delta Elite recently at my LGS and it looked mighty fine too, at around $1100-1200 as I recall.

The center target is at 50 yards from over my range bag. Fixed Heinie straight 8 sights. Ammo was Rim Rock 200 grain hardcast TC over AA#9 for 1250 fps.

A 1911 in .45 is the classic setup. The Commander was originally meant to be a 9, and that's the caliber that still suits it best.
But the design is simply a wonder; Browning got it so right, when he was really discovering a concept as well as a specific gun design.
The 1911 is something that every self respecting gunny should own.

I have three 1911's but these two are the best as far as accuracy and reliability. Colt Government 45acp Wiley Clapp and Dan Wesson Commander 9mm Vigil. I bought Colt new and the Vigil slightly used. Both cost about the same.

that Custom Colt looks sooooo good!

DW been calling me for ever now

@Hookeye - there's so many worthy 1911s out there now, it's almost hard to go wrong. And if you're set on a 5" in 10mm, almost every maker of production 1911s has you covered (dunno about Springfield Armory though). Many don't come from the factory with adjustable sights, though. But for production 1911s, I favor Dan Wesson, Colt, Kimber, SA, and I've even jumped on the Tisas bandwagon. Buddy has a Filipino RIA that's a good shooter. I'd like to give a plug for the Kimber "Camp Guard," but the one I picked up months ago, I still haven't shot yet :(

Dude, those are beautiful grips on that Wiley Clapp -- who makes them?

I have plastic semi auto’s, revolvers and 1911’s , of the 3 types 1911’s are always my favorite to shoot i have 3 of them. Top one is a RIA GI in 38 super, middle one is a Springfield V-16 Long Slide in 45 super/ 45acp and the bottom one is a Springfield Range Officer Elite in 45 auto . I am looking at a fourth one a RIA Rock Ultra FS in 40 S&W. IMG_2477.jpeg

Love my .40sw Rock. has been flawless. great value.

Only have one. My profile pic. It's a Phillipine made,by SAM. Commander size 45 acp. My kid did polish job where it countes and I just replaced the recoil spring,as well as the rest. Got used so, I didn't know how (used) it was when I got it. Anyone who shoots it can't believe how smooth it operates. Before that was a Sig P 228.
