Oddly enough, a downwardly-plunging firey handbask
I have had the good fortune to have 3 gunshows in the past month within 20 miles of my house, and I haven't had the desire to go to any of them! :uhoh: :scrutiny: I havent been shooting in about 3 months (before that it was like 8 months), my guns have about 1/10th of an inch of dust on them, and for some reason it doesn't bother me too much.

Is there a cure? Can these symptoms be transmitted through cyberspace? Am I destined to wither away, only to have an NRA membership and never feel again what it is that I am paying to protect? :( I have to do something to combat this...

Buy a new gun...it'll renew the passion you previously held for firearms.

You could just be depressed in general. Have you ever had bouts of depression before? This can be very unpleasant. One of the symptoms is: "You seldom enjoy the things that you used to enjoy." If you're serious about having this chronic lack of interest, you should evaluate yourself for other symptoms.

Send all your guns to me for safe keeping until you are properly retuned by an appropriate smith...

:D

Just Kidding...

Take a youngster shooting for the first time (find a neigborhood kid or distant relative who has never fired a gun) and once you see their excitement it should rekindle your spirit. If it doesn't, see above post by Taurus66.

Remeber, Chuckie Schumer, et al are watching and taking a new guy shooting really pi$$e$ them off

I'm with esheato, but just buying a new gun may not help. Before you do, decide which hole in your arsenal you can look to fill, and research it until you're just chomping at the bit. If you still can't get excited, buying it probably won't help.

If it doesn't see Taurus 66's post. Do you have a hard time getting out of bed? Are you apathetic about everything in general or have you just developed a new hobby?
Good luck,
RT

Everyone say "Melodrama!"

Well, getting out of bed has been difficult since about the age of 6. Sleeping in cozy bed away from it all is more appealing for just about everyone, I should think. How many people really would rather go to school or work than go back to bed at 630 am? (Aside from you mentally unstable "morning people", who need to be locked away from normal people, lest we be infe...affected... :D ) Apathy in general? No, not really. When I get a good nights sleep and have things I would rather be doing on the agenda, instead of recovering from a 6-day work week, I am quite enthusiastic.

Anyway, my post was meant somewhat in jest, what with the "can this be transmitted through cyberspace", but I do seem to lack the zeal for firearms I used to have.

I havent been shooting much because of the lack of desire, and more importantly, the lack of money. I have ammo for everything but the .22, but when it costs me $15 just to go to the range and back in fuel alone, and bills, yada yada, you get the picture. $15 was half a credit card minimum.

2ndly, I was a truck driver from January to July, and hated it for the most part (wasnt getting paid enough for the job and few miles), and quit. Money stopped, jobs were few (tried to get back into the tech sector), and became a university transit driver about a month ago, and the money is starting to flow better. Not that I see much of it...

3rdly, I have bills. LOTS of bills. I want to move to my own place, and I have enough for rent but not the light bill.

4th: I am developing a hobby of motorcycling. I have had one for a while, but never really enjoyed it. It was just a cheaper way to get to work/school.

So, yeah, depressed may fit the bill. Its not serious, nothing a little cash couldnt take care of. Most of its my own doing just catching up with me. I just didnt know it would be so sudden.

I think I am going to go play with the dog. :)

I havent been shooting much because of the lack of desire, and more importantly, the lack of money.

As we get older, we tend to lose our desires and fun for a lot of things. For example: When I was a teen with my drivers license, I couldn't wait one more second to get my first car and just go cruising, even aimlessly or over to a friend's house. I had a strong desire to drive. It's fast (much faster than my 12 speed bike), and it makes you look cool. But as the years pass on, driving anywhere now is no big deal. The fascination wears off.

The same can happen with guns. As time goes by, the interest in them as toys can change (as people change) to accept them more as "instruments" or "tools", rather than as "toys". Sure you still pick 'em up and shoot here and there, but today will never match up to yesterday, and tomorrow will never be the same as today.

What a drag it is getting old .....

I have to admit, with the price of gas going up, not to mention the costs of ammo, the never ending demands from work, the desire to actually spend time with my family, volunteering as an assistant soccer coach, etc., etc., I have spent less time shopping for and shooting guns than in my past. During law school, I spent large amounts of time with my .22, or haunting gun shows and gun shops. Haven't been to a show in years, a shop in months. And, my .22 has had a broken firing pin for about two years.

It's hell to grow up.

I don't know what this "growing old" talk is all about. I'm 55. Last year I started waterfowl hunting. I still deer hunt as well as small game. I've been to the range more than the ten years preveous...still not enough! I've been to three gunshows this year...and bought two rifles! Thats more than the last decade! I'm also reloading more...and having a ball. Have a cup of coffee and two doughnuts...that'll kick start your attitude :D Soon as I clear me a spot in the basement I'm going to put that muzzle loader together so I can do a little coal burning! .58 cal...that should thump! I don't know...maybe a 20 month old grandson is the reason for all this...what was the question? ;)
Mark.
ps: maybe you could find a new friend/shooting buddy...help give you a reason to 'get up and GO"

Hardtarget has successfully demonstrated there are exceptions to the rule. But my question to him (if I could ask him) is, "Does driving a vehicle down the road today give you the same excitement as it once did when you drove for the very first time?" That would be what I would ask. Afterwards, we can determine if this analogy is valid.

I sometimes get a little burned out on guns and the related expenses and hassles and even get a bit depressed from time to time.

However, I can't remember more than like 3-4 days in the last 10 years or more I did not do something gun related if only reading about them or picking one up or internet stuff. Those days w/o guns involved stuff like a death or a very serious breakup.

It's one of the few things that truly makes me happy, if I stopped liking them, I'd know something was seriously wrong with myself. I've had other hobbies and still do and I'm trying to get into motorcyles, but guns are and will always be #1. Heck, I even like them better than women sometimes!

Not so much shooting I like, but nothing beats the thrill of finding that special guns you have been looking for for years or finding that deal so good you can't believe it.

a passion for tools

Here's a somewhat flippant, but well-meaning suggestion, based in some amount of reality (mine).

Go hire a {crack addict, meth head, deranged psychopath, serial killer, terrorist organization...} to try to break into your house through a glass window and threaten your life. I'm betting that'll get your interest up in guns again.

Dark reality-based humor aside, i agree with others: sometimes those passions that make us happy one year - whether lovers, photography, good food, the woods, a course of study, guns ... - slide for a while. It's like the loss of a friend or family member or close pet. We lament the loss, we wonder what went wrong.

But at least in the case of tools, if they're worthwhile, the passion will return.

For example, I can't imagine life without the following: several pairs of eye glasses, a stove & some pots, a roof, some warm insulating clothing, rain gear and shoes, and my Kahr K9, soon to be complemented by a Rem 870P, and perhaps a .357. {see invasive psychopaths, above}

Get well soon.

What you need...

is to burn some powder.

Directions:
1) Shoot me and E-mail.
2) Some of my friends and I pull up with a Suburban full of guns and ammo.
3) Go to range and shoot until fingers bleed and/or out of ammo.
4) Profit???

Sending a PM, as well.

Yep, get a therapist and go on about how oyu no longer have a desire to shoot thing's....they will probably say you were loopy in the first place and are now cured lol

I've been through the same thing, and I'm still pretty young. For me it has nothing to do with depression. A couple times a year I decide to take up something new (the last project was rock climbing), and when that happens I spend very little time shooting. I don't even think about it much, although even in these down times I force myself to the range to make sure I can still hit what I'm aiming at with my handguns.

I always come back to it eventually. Usually what gets me jump started is that someone asks me to take them shooting. Their enthusiam after the first trip to the range is very contagious.

Mike,
Well the first problem is , you still have "Mopar" attached your username. Told you back in '09[tm] you needed to change that. :neener:

Called "Life" and "Priorities". Yes is sucks because it sounds so "responsible" and "mature-like".

Just growning pains, like the human body does with getting bigger, bones and muscles, ache and throb. The body is not developed until about age 16, brain, digestive, bones, muscles....About age 36 the body stops being as efficient as it was from 16-36. So the aches, pains come back again. You cannot eat spicy foods and you miss the soda can you mean to kick and bust your butt.

Seriously. The 'tailbone' [ last few vertabrae] of a kid are not fused until age 5. That is why a 2 year old can bend the way they do. The adults get a backache just watching the kid.

Anticipation of attainment. Quanity. Attention.

-We "Have to" catch a limit of fish. Instead of having fun and enjoying the day.

-Ditto with hunting. Gotta have the limit, the biggest, the longest shot, the...the

-Opposite Sex, one finally "gets that date". Lots of time the best part of the whole deal was chasing/ being chased. During the date - "what a jerk? will this date e-v-e-r end?"

Gun shows:

I quit attending the local ones a long time ago. Many of my old friends are gone now. The old dealers and businesses are gone. Mom&Pop Gun stores, owners died.

Last local I attended, just to meet some folks from out of town, seemed like a good place to meet. We visited outside and shot the breeze, admired the lab puppies. Eventually went inside to get ice cream. Oh- and one granddaughter reminded grandpa she "only have 2 bricks of .22 ammo left" :p She got 3 more, and Grandma bought her a new knife, she will have grow into the knife, still just a Case Camper for sentimental reasons.

Tulsa- make plans to attend the Tulsa show.

That one will re-instill faith in 'gun shows'. I have no idea how good the ice cream or beef jerky is. I was too busy handling EVERY 28 ga shotgun the joint had. I have a witness- I didn't miss a one. :D

I was drooling over a table of Model 27's, went bonkers over all the Gov't 1911s...and was like a kid in a candy store with all the USGI 1911 parts. I think maybe some hinges wore out on the plexi- cases from the folks opening them and getting stuff out for me to look at.

Make plans, something to look forward to. Bring toll money, and play money.

I'll be around the Shotguns,[ especially 28 ga] books, 1911s, BHPs , OLD S&Ws...there will be a short guy trying to keep up with me as last time. Larry is a lot of fun...he just needs longer legs to keep up. :p

Many a time I have gone fishing with a cane pole and never baited a hook, some of my best "fishing" was done this way.

Many a time I never fired a shot while hunting. Many times did not even take a long gun. Great 'hunting' experiences.

Too many times I arrived at range, never shot, I had too much fun assisting someone to shoot, teaching a kid, loading the trap machine, or digging in the trash for more soda cans for a kid to shoot.

Naps in the bed of my truck, or clubhouse porch with my newest bestest friend - a kid's dog - waiting , nudging " you got anymore peppermint in that pocket of yours?"
